THE Apple rumour-mill has been cranking out details about an "iPad mini" for months and yet another tech blog has speculated on the date for the big reveal.

Dow Jones technology website AllThingsD claims the device will unveiled on October 23, just three days prior to the release of Microsoft's new Surface tablet and two days before Apple reports quarterly earnings.

The source "familiar with Apple's plans" said the invitation-only event will be on a Tuesday, contrary to the usual Wednesday tradition for Apple announcements.

But others have suggested that the date is incorrect, given that earlier this week the speculated date for the launch was October 17. Invitations should have already been received if that event was to be taking place.

There has been no clues or official word from Apple yet on the reveal date.

Just days ago a comprehensive set of pictures of the rumoured iPad-mini were "leaked" via Twitter from Apple fan website 9to5mac.com.

The pictures reveal the shape and styling of the device, but add little to rampant speculation about the device's specifications.

The iPad "mini" is Apple's response to an emerging small tablet market pioneered by its competitors Google and Amazon. Exactly how it is expected to stack up against the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire depends upon which Apple fan site you read.

These smaller, cheaper, devices have been gradually eating away at the revolutionary 9in iPad's market dominance.

Alleged Apple "insiders" claim the new tablet is an attempt to steal the thunder from the release of Microsoft's new Windows 8 Surface tablets and an upgraded Kindle Fire later this month. It is said to be due to go on sale in November, for a last-minute Christmas sales rush.

The pictures show a device that would suit a commonly cited 7.85in liquid crystal display. They also show the yet-to-be-released tablet uses the same small connector cable introduced with the iPhone 5.

This controversial connector - touted by Apple as providing a boost in speed, security and space within its devices - has with one stroke made years worth of Apple peripheral gadgets obsolete.

It also is supposedly only fitted with wi-fi internet connectivity, with no 3G or 4G phone network access.

Rumours purport Apple has great faith in the potential of the smaller, sleeker, cheaper iPad - ordering as many as 10 million from its Chinese manufacturers.

Apple has refused to confirm or deny any of the reports - including whether or not the iPad mini is even planned - stoking the rumour fires further.
