SPIDER-MAN is back - and he doesn't look anything like Tobey Maguire.

Only days after the geek world went into a frenzy over the teaser trailer to The Dark Knight Rises, a Batman film that is more than a year away, studios hit fans with footage from the latest Spider-man film.

The Amazing Spider-man starts the angst-ridden super-hero's story from scratch, with Social Network star Andrew Garfield donning the mask instead of Maguire.

The trailer goes over familiar territory: Awkward teen loves girl from afar, gets bitten by a radioactive spider, has a creepy encounter with a sinister-looking guy in a lab, swings through New York in red and blue tights.

The point-of-view camera work in the trailer is a neat touch - it looks like something out of a first person shooter game.

The film's makers, Marvel and Sony, are hoping that the youthful Garfield will inject new energy into the multi-billion-dollar franchise. The last Spider-man film, Spider-man 3, broke box office records but was derided by critics, who thought that Maguire was getting too long in the tooth and that there were too many villains, a constant complaint for superhero films.

According to reports, the budget for the film hashit the $US200 million mark, although the studio says it has spent only a relatively modest $US80 million.

The Amazing Spider-man will not only go head to head with The Dark Knight Rises next year but also Marvel's hero epic The Avengers, which features Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and Captain America.

Hollywood is hoping superhero films keep their coffers full but this year's batch - Thor, X-Men First Class and Green Lantern - have been less than spectacular.
