COLD Chisel's comeback has suffered a major setback after front man Jimmy Barnes's dramatic collapse.

The Darwin Turf Club, where Barnes was scheduled to play, said the 55-year-old collapsed yesterday afternoon at approximately 1pm (AEST).

Barnes was rushed to hospital, and there were fears his heart condition, which led to major surgery four years ago, had resurfaced.

However, Barnes's camp have stated the collapse related to a "lingering viral flu" that had followed him through a European tour and the launch of Cold Chisel's reunion tour last week.

The singer has been ordered by doctors to have a month of total rest, meaning several solo shows have had to be cancelled.

"I hate to cancel shows and over the years I've very rarely done it," Barnes said in a statement.

"Sorry to anyone who's been let down by this but I'll be back on deck in a few weeks' time."

The collapse is terrible timing for the intricately planned Chisel comeback. In September, Barnes is due to begin rehearsals for Cold Chisel's extensive national tour.

Expected to be one of the year's biggest earners, it begins in October. Tickets go on sale next week.

And a new Cold Chisel studio album is due out later this year, following the reissue and re-release of their back catalogue last week.

Barnes was due to play the Darwin Turf Ball on Saturday. His son, David Campbell, will still perform at the event.

A statement from Barnes said he had been ordered to take it easy.

Some of his solo shows ahead of the upcoming Cold Chisel reunion tour have been cancelled.

Barnes had been battling flu after a gruelling European tour and yesterday visited doctors with concerns he might need to be hospitalised with more heart problems.

The fears proved to be unfounded, but doctors have ordered four weeks of total rest, forcing the cancellation and postponement of some solo engagements.

In 2007 Barnes underwent open heart surgery to replace a faulty aortic valve which he'd had since birth.

Barnes's son David Campbell tweeted that he had spoken to his father and "he is okay".

"Thank you all for your well wishes.

"He just needs time to recover.

"He will be back screaming in no time," Campbell said.
