WANT to make heavy bundles of confidential documents lighter?
There's an app for that.
Queensland ministers will carry around secure cabinet briefings on their iPads from now on after the State Government paid for the development of a new app.
And the Government expects other jurisdictions will want to source the brand-new software to lighten their own loads.
"Last weekend, for the first time, our Government trialled an application to get the entire cabinet bag, which is the holy grail of the Westminster government system of cabinet, onto minister's iPads," Premier Anna Bligh told a business lunch yesterday.
Ms Bligh said the state was the first in Australia to downsize the bulky folders, which was handy for travelling MPs.
"I expect to see it not only go to other governments around Australia but I think we could expect to see international interest in it," she said.
"This is the future."
The software contains multiple security measures to stop sensitive material falling into the wrong hands, she said.
Ms Bligh also announced the establishment of a Queensland Government chief information officer to drive policy development and project management.
The new chief-executive-level position would be sought in national advertising this weekend and would ensure Queensland was grasping opportunities like those the National Broadband Network would present.
The candidate will report to ICT Minister Simon Finn and give regular reports to cabinet on ICT performance.
"Queensland is riding the crest of a wave of innovation," she said.
"That demands that the very best possible advice be provided to government."
