Pardew praises electric Ameobi

Sky Bet

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew hailed the wonder strike of Sammy Ameobi which sent Scunthorpe out of the Carling Cup.

The League One minnows caused a shock to the visitors when Chris Dagnall volleyed past an impressive Tim Krul in the 15th minute.

The Magpies stepped up a gear in the secon -half and Ryan Taylor's superb free-kick brought the tie level before Ameobi's powerful effort finished off the Iron in extra-time.

And Pardew could not help but heap praise on 19-year-old Ameobi, the younger brother of fellow Newcastle striker Shola, who proved to be the unlikely hero at Glanford Park.

"I've been saying privately he could threaten (a place in) this first team," he told Sky Sports.

"He had a couple of cameos at Chelsea at the back end of last season, he's got a great brother who will keep his feet on the ground and great parents.

"He was terrific tonight and it was a fabulous goal. He's a different player to his brother - his feet are electric at times."

Problems

However, Pardew was unimpressed with his team's first-half display, adding: "It's a tight pitch and they are an organised side who gave us a lot of problems in the first half - but we were cheap with the ball and didn't really look like we were up for the game.

"Sometimes it's difficult to get the attitude of the players right - they almost expect things to happen sometimes - and we were lucky in some respects to be only 1-0 down at half-time.

"But in the second half we were terrific and could have got two or three, we really had them on the back foot."

The Magpies are looking at life without Joey Barton who earlier had a medical at QPR.

On the talisman's potential departure, Pardew added: "He's been down there (Loftus Road) and is going to take some time about the decision he makes.

"If he comes back he knows me and him have great respect for each other and we'll carry on."
