More bodies found after ship sinks

THE death toll from an Indonesian ship sinking off Borneo Island has climbed to 25 after rescuers pulled seven more bodies from the water.

Local rescue agency official Gusti Saiful said that at least six people are still missing and 74 were rescued today.

The six-tonne KM Martasiah passenger ship sank in strong winds on Monday about an hour after leaving Kotabaru on Pulau Laut island for Geronggang on Borneo, both in Indonesia's South Kalimantan province.

Based on the manifest, the ship was carrying 105 crew and passengers, but Saiful said the actual number of people on board might have been higher.

The Indonesian archipelago of more than 17,000 islands is heavily dependent on maritime services but the industry has a poor safety record and fatal accidents are common.

Up to 335 people were killed when a heavily overloaded ferry sank off Sulawesi island in January last year.
