MASTERCHEF contestant Arena Dunn is "kicking herself" for putting her hand up to face elimination, saying she would have avoided getting the boot had the competition been "fairer".

Dunn was shown the door after she volunteered for a final cook-off against Shannon Smyth using the key ingredient of a chicken and then lost.

The pair had put themselves in the hot seat after taking the blame for their team losing an earlier ?tag-team? relay cooking challenge.

"Looking back on it, I perhaps shouldn't have (nominated myself),? Dunn told news.com.au. ?Now that I?ve thought about it longer, I don't think it was my fault, but I didn't think about that at the time I guess.

"You kick yourself and think 'I could've not been in that position had we discussed it more'.?

The personal trainer now feels the whole team should have been put up to face the chopping block rather than ask for two individuals to single themselves out.

"It's hard, I don't like it at all,? she said. ?I don't think it?s a very good and fair way to do it, particularly the way that the team challenge was set up ... no one had control of one dish - each dish went across four or five people - so you couldn?t exactly pinpoint where the problem was.

?But it?s hard in that sort of situation - you don?t want to make enemies with the people you?re stuck in the house with.?

Despite being booted from the competition, the 25-year-old was grateful she had the opportunity to meet guest judge Nigella Lawson, however briefly.

"She pretty much got whisked onto set and then when she was finished judging she was off, so we got no time to talk to her at all.

"It was such a good opportunity and I think a lot of people were disappointed that they didn?t get to chat with her like we do with some of the other chefs."

While Channel 10 played up the surprise factor of the visit, Dunn said contestants had an inkling the domestic goddess would be there.

"We knew it wasn?t just George and Gary and we knew Nigella was in the country at the time," she said.

"But everyone was still star struck and she?s such a lovely person. Everyone was admiring her shoes. She had really nice shoes on."

The West Australian has put aside her fitness career to spend time with her boyfriend Travis expanding her family?s organic food store to include a caf and deli.
