A POPULAR Syrian-American lesbian blogger, who has been recording her thoughts on the current violent opposition protests in Syria, was seized by armed men in Damascus.
Amina Arraf, who writes under the name Amina Abdallah, has reportedly attracted fans from all over the world with her musings on the blog, "A Gay Girl in Damascus", The Guardian said.
According to her cousin Rania Ismail, she was bundled into a car by three armed men as she and a friend were on their way to a meeting in the Syrian capital today.
Ms Ismail wrote, "We do not know who took her, so we do not know who to ask to get her back. It is possible that they are forcibly deporting her. From other family members who have been imprisoned there [Damascus], we believe that she is likely to be released fairly soon. If they wanted to kill her, they would have done so."
Several Facebook pages were immediately set up calling for Amina's release.
She had reportedly become increasingly popular after writing about the Syrian protest movement and its continuing struggles in the face of a crackdown by President Bashar al Assad's government.
Writing about the regime yesterday, she said, "They must go, they must go soon. That is all there is to say."
More than 1300 people have been killed - including 210 members of the army and security forces - since protests against the government started in mid-March, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
