IT wasn't hard labour and he didn't have a boss watching his every move, but he did have thousands of radio listeners hearing every word.
Controversial former footballer Brendan Fevola did his first day of "real work" today in a shift with Melbourne radio station Gold 104.3's breakfast presenters Grubby and Dee Dee.
Dressed in a hoodie and jeans, he could have been any footballer being interviewed on an early morning radio program.
But he was there for the not-so-long slog from7.30am until 9am - half of the usual 6-9am morning program.
Even so, he admitted it was a tough start when the alarm went off at 5.15am.
"Yeah, struggled a little bit this morning but I'll get used to that," he said.
For Grubby and Dee Dee waiting in the studio, it was a new move on a game of Words with Friends on Dee Dee's phone that reassured them Fev was on his way.
"We were all pretty happy, a bit relieved actually. It came through and we thought 'hey that's a good sign, don't roll over and go back to sleep now'," Grubby said.
Fevola admitted the shift, which he will do every Tuesday and Thursday for the next nine weeks, wasn't hard work.
"It's pretty cruisy. It's nine o'clock and the day begins I suppose," he said.
Fev's Homework
It doesn't all end at 9am. Fev will have homework for two of his regular sections:
"Fev will fix that" - Fev will fix one problem for a listener each week. His first task is to plan a 50th birthday party by Thursday for the husband of a woman who lost her job.
"Are you smarter than Fev" - Competing against listeners, Fev's reputation is on the line with a morning quiz. He says he let this morning's caller win but mX suggests he needs to hit the books... or Google.
