KATIE Holmes's divorce from Tom Cruise is starting to look like a Mission: Impossible plot.

According to TMZ, Holmes is convinced private detectives hired by Cruise's Church of Scientology are watching her every move.

The sensational claims come as media tycoon Rupert Murdoch weighed into the divorce and slammed Scientologists as "creepy, maybe even evil".

TMZ reported that several mysterious men and vehicles had been spotted tailing Holmes around New York and staking out her apartment.

"Specifically a white Cadillac Escalade and black Mercedes SUV have been seen near Katie's NYC apartment for the past week," it said.

TMZ said Holmes was also being tailed by a "publication" - presumably one of the hundreds of tabloids and celeb mags that are desperate to uncover any dirt - but it believes the "mysterious" aren't journalists or paps.

Holmes has cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split but it is believed she initiated the divorce to save the couple's six-year-old daughter, Suri, from Scientology.

She wants sole custody of Suri and, according to The Sun, she is terrified Suri "would soon have to begin Scientology schooling".

Gary Soter, a spokesman for the Church of Scientology, responded to TMZ's claims and denied the church was following Holmes.

Scientology has been likened to a cult and Cruise is its leading light. The church, founded by sci-fi writer L. Ron. Hubbard, has been accused of trying to ruin the lives of former members who have spoken out against it.

Mr Murdoch, who is chairman of News Corp, which owns movie studio 20th Century Fox and publishes news.com.au, criticised Cruise's links to the church on his Twitter account.

"Scientology back in news. Very weird cult, but big, big money involved with Tom Cruise either number two or three in hiearchy," he wrote

"Watch Katie Holmes and Scientology story develop. Something creepy, maybe even evil, about these people."

He quickly came under fire for his comments but he stuck by his original tweets. "Since Scientology tweet hundreds of attacks. Expect they will increase and get worse and maybe threatening. Still stick to my story," he wrote.

The picture that has emerged of Cruise over the weekend does not look good.

The Sunday Mirror reports that Cruise and Holmes had separate bedrooms in their LA mansion, with Cruise's living quarters "on one side of a large communal area and Holmes's "on the other side of their home in the Scientology Celebrity Centre".

A source told the paper: "It was really weird in all respects. There were men in suits on all the doors of the complex and they would often escort you up to the apartment in an elevator keeping an eye on you. It was quite unnerving.

"Katie was really embarrassed about it, and didn?t seem to like people to see the way they were living behind closed doors. But she just got on with it and knew there was nothing she could do about it."
