FORMER ABC presenter Andy Muirhead is expected to plead guilty in a child pornography case, a court has heard.

Muirhead had previously pleaded not guilty to a charge of using the internet to access child pornography and another of possessing child exploitation material.

The former host of popular television program Collectors appeared in the Tasmanian Supreme Court on Monday, where the case was adjourned until July 31 and bail continued.

Prosecutor Maitland Lincoln expressed concern about the length of time the matter was taking, arguing Muirhead should be made to enter pleas.

Muirhead's lawyer Kim Baumeler said her client was not yet in a position to do so because the number of pornographic images he is alleged to have accessed had changed.

Justice David Porter acknowledged the case had "not progressed speedily" but said a forced plea could end up being "something rather fictitious".

He adjourned the matter in the expectation that pleas of guilty would be entered.

Muirhead was charged in June 2010 and took unpaid leave from the ABC, where he also presented the Hobart breakfast radio show.

He was involved in a preliminary proceedings hearing in August last year and his case has been adjourned several times in the Supreme Court.
