THE cast of Modern Family has filed a lawsuit against 20th Century Fox, according to reports.

The co-stars apparently want out of their current contracts and for them to be declared null and void in a bid to increase their salaries.

The comedy series has been a massive success, scoring awards and critical acclaim and now Sofia Vergara, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet want to be compensated accordingly.

The lawsuit claims that the contract violates a ?seven year? law in California that bans personal service contracts which are longer than seven years, TMZ reports.

The gang also wants to be able to do other acting jobs outside of their show and Fox which they currently have severe restrictions on.

The Hollywood Reporter claims that Fox recently offered to increase the cast salary to $US150,000 per episode with a $50,000 per episode bonus for season four; $200,000 per episode for season five, $225,000 for season six and up to $325,000 for a probable season nine.

This offer was reportedly rejected with the actors wanting much more. In the final season of hit sitcom Friends, Jennifer Aniston and her co-stars were receiving $1 million per episode.

Ed O'Neill - who plays Jay Pritchett on the hit show - was not initially involved in the lawsuit, but has since reportedly joined his castmates.
