LOVE of technology is swamping us in power cables.
Old camera manuals and warranties, disused phone chargers, outdated hi-tech accessories and a variety of cables are filling drawers and boxes nationwide.
Now 86 per cent of Aussies have a "tech box" for the bits and pieces they're not sure what to do with.
And the ones that we are using are a growing threat as tripping and fire hazards.
New research by Optus has revealed about four out of five people are hoping the box's contents will come in handy again in the future despite 47 per cent of us, stashing old warranties and manuals for devices we have thrown out and 33 per cent keeping empty packaging among our haul of cables.
"Some Aussies pass old technology items on to the family while others simply hold on to unused tech items because over 60 per cent do not know how to dispose of them safely," said Michael Smith, Optus marketing managing director.
Insurer GIO now estimates more than 40 per cent of Victorian homes have two or more flat-screen, LCD or plasma TVs, 45 per cent have at least two laptops and a quarter have a tablet computer.
"Excessive cables can pose a very real fire risk," GIO said.
