Stricker, who opened with a four-under 68 on Thursday, was out in six-under 30 thanks to four birdies and an ace at the par three eighth.
He picked up another birdie at 15 but bogeys at 16 and 17 dragged him back towards the chasing pack.
The 44-year-old Stricker won twice last year but is bidding for his first title of 2011 and is a moderate 32nd on the Money List.
Norhern Ireland's Rory McIlroy shared the overnight lead with American Chris Riley, and had looked to take advantage of his earlier tee-time to pull clear of the field.
But the 22-year-old Northern Irishman mixed three bogies in his front nine with birdies on the second, fifth and seventh.
It was a similar story on the back nine, as his good work in carding a further three birdies was undone by a double-bogey on 14 and another dropped shot on the last.
Australian Rod Pampling shot an impressive 66 to move up the leaderboard into second place, tied alongside McIlroy with American duo Ricky Barnes (70) and Jonathan Byrd (67).
As for former Ryder Cup player Riley, he endured a miserable day as a three-over 75 dropped him back from a share of the lead into a tie for 20th on three-under.
