THE use of mobile devices to buy goods has surged from $155 million in 2010 to more than $5 billion today.
A report released by the Australian Centre for Retail Studies found there was dramatic growth in consumers using devices including smartphones and tablets to make purchases.
It is expected to result in more than $5.6 billion worth of retail purchases on mobile devices in 2012.
The report says the PC still remained the most important tool for customers to research products and services, but the use of mobile devices continued to grow at a rapid rate.
''Price comparisons, locating retailers, reading reviews and checking product availability are the most common activities overall,'' the report says.
''Devices can play complementary roles throughout the customer journey - yet another opportunity for savvy marketers to play to the strengths of each device.''
Regardless of how the customer made a purchase, either online or offline, technology assisted the process in discovering the item, with Australians using their desktop (92 per cent), smartphones (47 per cent), and tablets (25 per cent) to find products and services.
