FBI helping hunt for woman missing in Nepal

THE FBI says it's helping the US State Department in the investigation of a Colorado woman who disappeared while trekking alone in Nepal.

Denver FBI spokesman Dave Joly said today the agency was also working with Nepalese authorities on the disappearance of 23-year-old Aubrey Sacco of Greeley.

Ms Saccohas notbeen heard from since April 20, when she e-mailed her parents from Nepal. She planned to finish her trip around April 30.

Her father, Paul Sacco, told the Greeley Tribune that FBI agents had made two or three visits to his home.

Paul Sacco went to Nepal in May to look for his daughter.

He said he recovered her laptop computer and journal from a hotel.

Aubrey Sacco graduated from the University of Colorado last year.

'Red Shirt' to run for Thai government

A THAI protest leader accused of terrorism was released from prison briefly to apply to run in a by-election seen as a key test of the opposition's prospects of success in nationwide polls.

Kokaew Pikulthong, a senior "Red Shirt" involved in the mass rally in Bangkok that ended last month, will stand against incumbent Panich Vikitsreth of the ruling Democrat Party in the July 25 vote in the capital.

A Thai court last week granted permission for Kokaew, the candidate of the main opposition Puea Thai Party, to be released temporarily from Bangkok Remand Prison to register to challenge Panich, a vice foreign minister.

Mr Kokaew, who has not been convicted of any crimes relating to his role in the two-month-long street protest, was later returned to detention, but is expected to seek permission to be released again to campaign for votes.

The Red Shirts' rally, which at its peak attracted up to about 100,000 people demanding immediate elections, sparked outbreaks of violence that left 90 people dead, mostly civilians, and nearly 1900 injured.

Enraged protesters set fire to dozens of major buildings after the army crushed the demonstration by the mostly poor and working class Reds with an assault on their vast fortified encampment in central Bangkok on May 19.

The Red Shirts were campaigning for elections they hoped would oust the government, which they view as undemocratic because it came to power with the backing of the army after a court ruling threw out the previous administration.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva proposed November polls in a bid to end the crippling protests, but shelved the plan because the Reds -- many of whom seek the return of fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra -- refused to disperse.

Mr Abhisit, whose government was elected by parliamentary vote in 2008 and enjoys support among the Bangkok-based elite, must call nationwide elections by the end of next year at the latest.

Many of the Red Shirt leaders are in jail facing terrorism charges for their roles in the unrest. The government has rejected the opposition's call for a state of emergency to be lifted in the capital for the by-election.

The Hobbit trilogy - what to expect

The Hobbit

Bilbo Baggins's adventure will now span three epic films, not two. Picture: Warner Bros Source: Supplied

The Hobbit, prequel to The Lord of the Rings, explores the journey of Bilbo Baggins and how he came to possess the ring later passed onto his kinsman, Frodo. In cinemas December 2012

  • Jackson splitting Hobbit into three parts
  • New material to link films with Rings trilogy
  • Expect epic battle with Necromancer

PETER Jackson hasn't finished with Middle-earth just yet.

After wrapping shooting last month, the director dropped heavy hints that he had more than enough material to turn his two Hobbit movies into three.

But his official announcement on Facebook today that The Hobbit was to become a trilogy still caught fans by surprise, more so because unlike The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit is a little on the short side.

J.R.R. Tolkien's children's book is only 320 pages long and lacks the depth and texture of his follow up so it's worth reading Jackson's statement in full to get an idea how he's going to stretch the tale over three movies.

"It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie - and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved 'yes'.

"We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance. The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

"So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of The Hobbit films, I'd like to announce that two films will become three.

It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, 'a tale that grew in the telling'.

"Cheers, Peter J."

The magic word in Jackson's statement is "appendices".

Tolkien wrote extensive notes on the history of Middle-earth, which he turned into the six appendices that appear at the end of The Lord of the Rings.

These cover many of the events that take place between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and act as a bridge between two stories that are very different in tone and scope.

In The Hobbit, Gandalf's lengthy absences are a literary device to keep the action centred on Bilbo and the dwarves. When he does turn up he is very much a deus ex machina character, someone all powerful who can get the heroes out of trouble.

This worked fine in the confines of a children's novel but when Tolkien went back to the story of Bilbo Baggins and his magic ring, he needed to explain those absences.

In the appendices, it is explained that Gandalf was away battling the Necromancer, an evil force that threatens to unleash an army of darkness from a fortress deep within the forest of Mirkwood.

Tolkien reveals that the Necromancer is none other than Sauron, the chief villain from The Lord of the Rings, and that his forces are desperately searching for the ring of power.

The battle to oust Sauron from his fortress of Dol Guldur will likely form the basis of the new material Jackson plans to shoot, and will offer him the opportunity to connect The Hobbit more closely to his Lord of the Rings trilogy (two Gandalf's main allies in his fight are Galadriel and the wizard Saruman, both of whom featured prominently in the Rings films).

It's also likely that fans will see the fight sooner rather than later. Because The Hobbit already features an epic clash in its closing chapters, Jackson will want to avoid cramming the final film with too many battles.

It's ironic that Jackson is now making three films out of The Hobbit when a complicated fight over the film rights, a fall-out between Jackson and the studio heads, the bankruptcy of MGM and a union dispute almost stopped the book getting to the screen.

Jackson's studio backers will be happy with the result. They have been working frantically in the background to work out the rights issues and draw up new contracts for film's cast and crew.

The heads of all three studios involved, MGM, Warner Bros and New Line, all issued statements soon after Jackson's supporting his creative vision.

The Lord of the Rings franchise is a lucrative one and the studios will want to keep it going as long as possible (Warners' decision to serve up the final Harry Potter book in two chunky installments earned the studio an extra billion dollars at the box office).

The first film in the trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, will be released as scheduled this December. The second film, which was previously known as The Hobbit: There and Back Again, will be released a year later but under a new title. The third film is scheduled to appear in winter 2014.

NATO personnel gunned down

A MAN in an Afghan police uniform has gunned down three NATO personnel in the war-torn country's troubled south, the latest so-called "green on blue" attack.

The deaths take the toll this year in "green-on-blue" killings -- in which Afghan forces turn their weapons against their Western allies -- to at least 26, in a total of 18 such incidents.

In keeping with its usual policy, NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) gave few details of Sunday's incident and did not reveal the nationality of the victims.

"An individual wearing an Afghan National Civil Order Police uniform turned his weapon against International Security Assistance Force service members in southern Afghanistan today, killing three service members," ISAF said in a statement.

An ISAF spokesman said the gunman was wounded and detained after the attack, which happened around 5pm (2230 AEST), and is now under investigation. The incident is not thought to have happened on an ISAF base, the spokesman said.

The spokesman added that ISAF was still investigating whether the attacker was a police officer or not.

The Afghan Civil Order Police was set up in 2006 as an elite riot control force.

The attack comes nearly two weeks after three men in Afghan police uniforms killed a soldier with the US-led force, also in the south.

An increasing number of Afghan troops have turned their weapons against NATO soldiers who are helping Kabul fight a decade-long insurgency by hardline Taliban Islamists.

Some of the assaults are claimed by the Taliban, who say they have infiltrated the ranks of Afghan security forces, but many are attributed to cultural differences and antagonism between the allied forces.

ISAF has taken several security measures in response to the shootings, including assigning "guardian angels" -- soldiers who watch over their comrades as they sleep.

NATO has around 130,000 soldiers fighting alongside some 350,000 Afghan security personnel against the Taliban-led insurgency, but they are due to pull out of the country in 2014.

The Western coalition is to hand over security to local forces by mid-2013 and will play a support role up to the final withdrawal by the end of the following year.

Henry Hopper -- who starred in Gus Van Zant's "Restless" in 2011 -- is being sued by the mother of an unidentified 16-year-old girl ... who claims the girl met Hopper through a mutual friend in Feb. 2011.

It's unclear if Doe ever reported the allegations to police.

Indonesia visit will happen, says Obama

UNITED States President Barack Obama says his twice delayed trip to Indonesia is going to happen.

His trip to the most populous Muslim nation is tied with a trip to Australia but he made no specific mention of Australia.

Domestic emergencies including the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill have kept Mr Obama from visiting previously.

Mr Obama held a bilateral meeting with Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on the sidelines of Toronto's G20 meeting.

"Because of the crisis that we've had in the Gulf, I've had to delay the trip," Mr Obama told reporters at G20.

"But graciously, for a second time now, the president has re-extended the invitation, and I am confident that we are going to get there."

Carr welcomes lawyer's release

Foreign Minister Bob Carr has confirmed Australian lawyer Melinda Taylor is set to be released by 9pm Monday AEST.

Detained Australian lawyer Melinda Taylor has finally been allowed to make contact with her family.

Melinda Taylor ICC Libya

Australian lawyer Melinda Taylor is expected to be released from a Libyan jail today. Source: AFP

UPDATE: THE federal government has welcomed news Libyan authorities are expected to release Australian lawyer Melinda Taylor later today.

A spokesman for Foreign Minister Bob Carr said "all going well" the International Criminal Court lawyer will be released into the custody of Australian officials tonight and will board a plane bound for Europe by midnight.

"We welcome the news that she is likely to be released today," the spokesman told AAP from New York.

"We thank the Libyan authorities for their cooperation."

Australia also thanks the wider international community for their help and support, the spokesman said.

Ms Taylor is likely to be taken to Rome before her onward journey to her home in The Hague.

Ms Taylor, along with three of her ICC colleagues, was detained in the Libyan city of Zintan on June 7 while representing Seif al-Islam, the son of the former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Libyan officials said she was found carrying documents for Seif that were judged a threat to national security.

Senator Carr has lobbied hard for her release, even visiting the Libyan capital Tripoli last month to press her case.

Ms Taylor was not able to speak to her husband and young daughter until last week.

Senator Carr said Ms Taylor was permitted to call her home in The Hague shortly after a visit by Australia's ambassador David Ritchie.

Mr Carr subsequently spoke to Ms Taylor's Brisbane-based parents John and Janelle, who were relieved to hear she was finally allowed a phone call.

Her parents had pleaded with Libya to release their daughter in time for her toddler's third birthday in July.

The three other detained ICC staffers are from Lebanon, Russia and Spain.

Mr Carr said a week ago that talks in The Hague between the ICC and the Libyan authorities had resulted in "the ICC expressing regret, effectively an apology for any misunderstandings".

The ICC has stopped short of admitting to any wrongdoing but has said it will fully investigate its team's behaviour upon their return.

"When the ICC has completed its investigation, the Court will ensure that anyone found responsible for any misconduct will be subject to appropriate sanctions," it added in a statement issued last month.

The ICC wants to try Seif al-Islam, 39, for crimes against humanity during his father's rule, which came to an abrupt end last year.

Tripoli insists he should be tried locally and filed on May 1 a motion challenging the ICC's jurisdiction to put him on trial in The Hague.

Comedian's outrageous knock on our swimmers

AUSTRALIANS love banter, especially when it comes to sport.

But every so often someone crosses that line. We reckon US comedian Jenny Johnson has crossed that line.

Every stand-up needs material and it's no surprise to learn that the Olympics is the flavour of the month.

Today Johnson, a self-proclaimed "mother of two, a***hole", with more than 240,000 Twitter followers, targeted the Australian swim team.

"I bet the female Australian swimmers have amazing co**s."

She probably made this joke because: a) the Olympics is an easy card to play and; b) we're really, really good at swimming.

There's no denying she made an impact, though, with 200 retweets and 140 favourites.

We guess even TV stars get jealous.

Meanwhile, Switzerland footballer Michel Morganella faces being expelled from the London Olympics for allegedly sending a racist message on Twitter.

Swiss Olympic committee spokesman Christof Kaufmann told The AP that team chief Gian Gilli was considering the case.

Swiss media report that Morganella posted an offensive message about South Korean people after the Swiss team lost 2-1 to South Korea on Sunday.

Swiss daily Le Matin published images of a tweet from the account (at)morgastoss which has since been deleted.

The 23-year-old defender would become the second Olympic athlete kicked off a team for offensive Twitter comments.

Greece dropped triple jumper Voula Papachristou last week after a comment mocking African immigrants.

James Holmes Charged with 142 COUNTS -- Including 1st Degree Murder

Breaking News

0723_james_holmes_tmz_mugshot_wmJames Holmes has been charged with 24 counts of 1st degree murder and 116 counts of attempted murder after shooting up a Colorado movie theater this month -- and if convicted, he could face the death penalty.

Holmes stands accused of murdering 12 people and wounding 58 during a midnight screening of "Dark Knight Rises" on July 20th in Aurora, CO -- one of the most heinous shootings in US history.

The 24 counts of murder are split into two categories -- 12 counts for premeditated murder, and 12 counts for murder "under circumstances evidencing an attitude of universal malice, manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life generally."

Same deal for the 116 attempted murder charges -- 58 counts of attempted premeditated murder, and 58 counts of murder with "universal malice."

Holmes was also charged with one count of possession of an explosive, and one count of a "crime of violence."

It's unclear what defense Holmes' lawyers are planning because they haven't entered a plea yet -- but if the jury finds Holmes guilty of 1st degree murder, the death penalty's a possibility in Colorado.

Holmes' next court date is August 9th.

Pattinson is 'turning to strangers'

Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson's post-break-up behaviour has friends worried. Picture: AP Source: AP

HE'S stopped taking Kristen Stewart's calls and wasted no time hiring a removal firm to move out all his belongings from their LA mansion.

Now a devastated Robert Pattinson is reportedly finding solace in the arms of strangers.

The Sun reports that Pattinson's post-break-up behaviour has his friends worried.

A source close to the actor told the UK tabloid: "Robert has resorted to asking strangers out to keep him company.

"He went out for drinks with a woman staying in his hotel and he told her it was 'ridiculous' he had nobody to talk to. He?s been spending most of his days off playing computer games."

Pictures of Pattinson's girlfriend of three years kissing a married director shattered his world.

According to gossip sites, he was all set to propose to Stewart before Us Weekly exposed her affair with Rupert Sanders, her director on Snow White and the Huntsman.

Stewart made a grovelling public apology last week for her "momentary indiscretion", which she said had "jeopardised the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob".

Although she claimed her affair with Sanders was brief, Sanders' brother-in-law claimed it had been going on for six months.

According to Radar Online, Pattinson is determined to confront Sanders.

"Rob wants to have a man-to-man chat with Rupert to find out exactly what happened between him and Kristen," a source told the gossip site.

Several reports claim that Stewart and Sanders never had sex and Sanders' own father claims the director's marriage to model Liberty Ross will survive.

"From what I gather nothing really happened and it is all a lot of fuss about nothing. I should imagine it was something very brief," he told People magazine.

Crisis: Is Ten's breakfast toast?

Ten Breakfast

Host Paul Henry has proved a divisive figure on the show. Source: The Sunday Telegraph

BELT-TIGHTENING has been blamed for the axing of Ten's morning show, The Circle, while rumoured $1 million-man Paul Henry and his ratings flop, Breakfast have survived an inevitable makeover of the network's failing AM programming.

In a surprise scheduling switch up, Ten boss James Warburton said the decision to cease production and sack staff, including The Circle hosts Gorgi Coghlan and Yumi Stymes, was "unfortunate'' but part of a new strategy of "tight fiscal control and cost discipline.''

As shocking as it has been swift, the credits will roll on the final episode of The Circle this Friday - never having reached its ratings promise and flagging even further after the exit of Logie-winning co-host Chrissie Swan.

The Punch - Make morning television less of a dog?s breakfast

Meanwhile, the poor performing Breakfast has also been trimmed by a half hour, making room for a slate of cheap US import shows including The Talk, Entertainment Tonight and The Insider.

Ten's morning line-up will now comprise: 6am-8.30am Breakfast, 8.30am to 9am Wurrawhy (for pre-schoolers), 9am to 10am The Talk (a chat show featuring Sara Gilbert and Sharon Osbourne), 10am to 11am Ten Morning News (hosted by Ron Wilson), 11am to 11.30am Entertainment Tonight (recently dropped by Channel 9) and 11.30am to 12noon The Insider (an ET spin-off show).

Staff of the embattled Breakfast were told of the changes at an emergency meeting this morning, with overnight concerns the lights would be turned off their show.

Premiering to great expectations in February, Breakfast has failed to trouble the OzTam scorers or dent the rivalry between Nine's Today show and Channel 7's market leader, Sunrise.

Its launch executive producer Majella Weimers left earlier this month, hot on the heels of third-wheel co-host Andrew Rochford.

It now leaves Henry and co-host Kathryn Robinson to right a sinking ship or go down with it.

Google failed to delete private data

Google has launched Maps Coordinate, a new app that will allow users to track workers through their phones.

AFTER being caught spying on people across Australia and Europe with its wi-fi-slurping Street View cars, Google told angry regulators it would delete the ill-gotten data. But it didn't.

Britain's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has received a letter from Google in which the company admits it kept a "small portion" of the electronic information collected from the UK and other countries.

"Google apologises for this error," Peter Fleischer, Google's global privacy counsel, said in the letter, which the ICO published.

The ICO said in a statement that Google Inc, based in Mountain View, California, had agreed to delete all the data nearly two years ago, adding that its failure to do so "is cause for concern".

Other regulators were less diplomatic, with Ireland's deputy commissioner for data protection, Gary Davis, calling Google's failure "clearly unacceptable".

Davis said his organisation had conveyed its "deep unhappiness" to Google and wants answers by Wednesday.

Google said other countries affected included Australia, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland and Austria. Attempts to reach regulators in several of those countries weren't immediately successful.

Google angered officials on both sides of the Atlantic in 2010 when it acknowledged that its mapping cars, which carried cameras across the globe to create three-dimensional maps of the world's streets, had also scooped up passwords and other data being transmitted over unsecured wireless networks. Investigators have since revealed that the intercepted data included private information, including legal, medical and pornographic material.

Google had meant to purge the data, and it chalked up its mistake to human error.

The company said it recently discovered the data while undertaking a comprehensive manual review of Street View disks. The company said it had contacted regulators in all of the countries where it had promised to delete data but realised it had not.

Fleischer's letter asks Britain's ICO for instructions on how to proceed.

The ICO, which said it was in touch with other data protection authorities in the EU over the development, told Google that it must turn over the data immediately so it can undergo forensic analysis.

The disclosure comes just over a month after the ICO reopened its investigation into Google's Street View, saying that an inquiry by authorities in the United States raised new doubts about the disputed program.

In April, the US Federal Communications Commission fined Google, saying the company "deliberately impeded and delayed" its investigation into Street View.

The ICO has the power to impose fines of up to STG500,000 ($760,000) for the most serious data breaches, although penalties are generally far less severe and can involve injunctions or reprimands.

Residents return to burnt homes

The US is in the grip of weather-related disasters from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Coast.

Homes are destroyed by the Waldo Canyon fire in the Mountain Shadows area of Colorado Springs in the US. Source: AP

UPDATE: PEOPLE who fled the most destructive fire in Colorado's history have visited the most devastated neighbourhood, and many found their homes among the nearly 350 burned to the ground.

Two bodies were found in the ruins lifting the death toll to 17.

Residents marvelled at the random path of disaster.

Nothing remained of CJ Moore's home but the concrete, but the letters in her mailbox were unscathed.

''It's just unreal. Unreal,'' she said.

''Good Lord! I've never seen anything like this. And thank God there was nobody there.''

Nearby cars were burned to nothing but charred metal, but three neighbours' homes were untouched.

Melted bowling balls were scattered in Moore's front yard.

About 7000 people will be allowed to return to their homes for good on Sunday night local time.

That would leave about 3000 still evacuated, down from more than 30,000 at the peak of the Waldo Canyon fire in Colorado Springs.

The fire was 45 per cent contained late on Sunday night local time after a long week of shifting winds that frustrated firefighters.

It was one of many burning across the West, including eight in Utah and a fast-growing blaze in Montana that forced residents in several small communities to leave.

Authorities at the Colorado Springs fire said they are confident they have stopped flames from spreading.

''We're cautiously optimistic,'' incident commander Rich Harvey said on Sunday.

''We still remain focused on things that could go wrong.''

The two victims' names haven't been released.

Police Chief Pete Carey said on Saturday an estimated 10 people who had been unaccounted for had been located.

Investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the fire that broke out on June 23, and which so far has cost $US8.8 million ($A8.61 million) to battle.

Dangerous conditions had kept them from beginning their inquiry.

Meanwhile, more than three million people in the eastern US are facing a second day of 40 degree temperatures without electricity after storms ripped through the region.

It could be several days before all power outages in Washington, DC, and elsewhere are restored, officials say and the National Weather Service says more thunderstorms are possible.

"Unlike a polite hurricane that gives you three days of warning, this storm gave us all the impact of a hurricane without any of the warning of a hurricane," Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley said.

Mobile phone and internet service remain affected, petrol stations were shut down and residents have been urged to conserve water. Some major online services also saw delays and disruptions.

In Colorado, firefighters have contained about 45 per cent of the Waldo Canyon fire outside Colorado Springs, according to the Denver Post.

Temperatures shot back above 37C in many areas, prompting the US National Weather Service to warn of the prospect of severe thunderstorms including large hail and damaging winds.

"Cities from St. Louis, Missouri to Washington DC are forecast to approach or break daily record high temperatures for yet another day and there may be more all-time records broken," added AccuWeather, a private weather service.

Pepco, the utility that serves Washington and some of its suburbs, said it may be a full week before service is restored to all its customers by teams of linesmen that included reinforcements from as far as Oklahoma and Florida.

"The devastation is extensive and while we expect to have the vast majority of customers restored by the end of day Friday, restoration for some customers may extend into the weekend," Pepco regional president Thomas Graham said.

Local authorities in Washington put out a hyperthermia alert, saying the heat index - which is the thermometer reading adjusted to take humidity into account - in the afternoon was 101 degrees fahrenheit (38C).

"Cooling centers" remained opened in many urban areas as refuges for those - notably the elderly - unable to cope without air conditioning, and at least one major supermarket chain gave away free ice to all comers.

The District of Columbia's emergency management agency suggested going to a movie or a museum in order to beat the heat. "Bottom line is, stay (as) hydrated and cool as possible," it said on its Twitter feed.

Some 3.7 million homes lost power in Friday's storms and four states - Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Ohio - declared states of emergency.

"The power is slowly coming back on line," West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomlin told CNN on Sunday, adding however that "we still have over half a million people without power."

"We just once again ask people to be patient," he said. "It's going to take a few days."

In Baltimore, Maryland, the local Baltimore Gas and Electric utility said it had deployed 1,000 trucks to restore power to 306,000 customers in and around the major port city.

Storm debris was gone from major highways in the region, but downed branches and trees still littered secondary routes.

Responsible for the extreme early-summer weather has been a high pressure area parked over the southeastern United States - the same slow-moving weather system blamed for a fatal wildfire in Colorado earlier in the week.

Firefighters supported by water bombers managed over the weekend to contain much of the Waldo Canyon inferno that killed three people, destroyed nearly 350 residences and left many hundreds homeless.

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, speaking Sunday on CNN, said it felt as if the worst was over. "But we also know that Mother Nature will be fickle out here," he added. "We're keeping ourselves very alert."

President Barack Obama visited Colorado on Friday to see the devastation first-hand and to praise "the courage and determination and professionalism" of those fighting the flames.

Bride gives birth at wedding

A BRIDE gave birth only minutes after tying the knot in France, making it more of a "big day" than anticipated.

"It did rather shake us up," admitted Jean-Robert Gachet, mayor of Jallais, after hearing that mother and baby were doing well.

Saturday's ceremony at 11am (7pm AEST) was nearly called off after the heavily pregnant bride had several false alarms, although her due date was July 14.

The bride was "definitely a bit worn out, but we put that down to the stress of the wedding. I tried to hurry it up a bit so that she didn't get too tired," said Mr Gachet.

But only moments after the happy couple said their vows and emerged outside to pose for the traditional photos, while the guests left for the reception, the bride suddenly felt unwell and went back into the town hall.

Emergency services were called, but her waters had already broken and she gave birth to a little boy on the spot at 12.15pm.

"The cry of the new born boy was an emotional moment! It was a first for us and for the emergency services," Mr Gachet said.

"Sexting is normal": Study

The Australian Federal Police have launched an anti sexting video warning teenagers of the risk in sending provocative images from the mobile phones.

sexting

Sexting. Picture: Adam Ward Source: The Daily Telegraph

SEXTING may now be just another part of dating for young adults who have grown up with smart phones and social media, a study has found.

Researchers from the University of Michigan studied the behaviour of 3447 young adults aged between 18 and 24 and found that sexting is very common and mostly harmless.

The study, in the Journal of Adolescent Health, contradicts the broader public perception of sexting, saying the behaviour does not correlate with risky sexual behaviours or psychological problems.

Researchers say it is another matter for younger age groups where legal and sexual development issues emerge.

But assistant professor Jose Bauermeister said the portrayal of sexting in the media and health services as unsavoury, deviant or even criminal may be unfair for young adults.

The study looked at how sexting impacted the health life of young-adult participants.

It found nearly half of the participants had engaged in sexting, and most of those who did said it was a reciprocal exercise with their romantic partners.

Researchers asked about the number of partners participants in the study had been with and whether or not they had had unprotected sex .

The study also found no greater levels of depression, anxiety or low self-esteem among those who engaged in sexting, Bauermeister said.

'Bird man' faces court for sitting in tree

A MAN in southwestern China who lived in a eucalyptus tree for more than three months to protest the planned demolition of his home is being tried for disturbing public order.

Chen Maoguo was dubbed the "bird man" for his tree-top sit-in last year in the Chongqing region, staged to protest what he considered inadequate compensation for the razing of his home, the Yunnan Information News said.

His home was one of many to be knocked down to make way for a shopping mall in Fengjie county.

However, his unusual protest beginning last August attracted crowds and media attention, leading to his arrest in November for disturbing public order, said the report, posted on the popular Chinese web portal Sina.com.

During his demonstration, Mr Chen pulled all of his food, water, clothing and other needs up by rope into the small makeshift shelter he constructed in a eucalyptus tree, it said.

The report said Mr Chen was to appear in a local court today. It did not say how old Mr Chen was, or what penalties he could face.

Land seizures, often involving corrupt officials and businesses eyeing real estate profits, have been a growing source of unrest in China.

The problem stirred an uproar last year as a property boom and resulting rash of mass evictions caused a number of violent clashes, protests and even suicides by stubborn homeowners.
