FLORIDA is renowned for its beaches, palm trees and alligators but will now be able to add a new claim to fame - giant snails.
An invasion of the eight inch giant African land snails is currently underway around the Miami area.
The gastropods are considered among the most dangerous pests in the world, reproducing at a phenomenal rate and carrying a parasite which can infect humans with a non-lethal strain of meningitis.
The creature?s bodies extend far from their shells and eat so voraciously they leave trails of excrement everywhere they go presenting residents with a hideous site.
Able to lay up 1200 eggs a year, the creatures are a slithering monstrosity according to Florida?s Department of Agriculture, which can eat through paint and stucco.
