Police called as Nike sneaker sale causes riot

POLICE in riot gear attended a Florida mall as fights broke out prior to the release of the new Nike sneaker, WOFL-TV reported.

Twitter users tweeted pictures of large crowds behind security barriers outside the Foot Locker House Of Hoops store in Orlando where the shoes go on sale after midnight, today in the early hours.

Police officers wearing riot gear evacuated hundreds of people from the mall parking lot. It was not clear whether anyone was hurt or arrested during the incident.

Sneakerheads have been camping outside stores across the US in anticipation of the release of the Foamposite Galaxy shoe, WTXF-TV reported.

The shoes cost $220 and on Craigslist, someone offered a car -- a 1996 Cavalier -- for a pair, with others prepared to pay $2400.

A re-release by Nike of Air Jordan XI late last year sparked a US-wide shopping frenzy which led to fights, vandalism and arrests as desperate shoppers scrambled to buy the limited edition shoes.
