Indonesia visit will happen, says Obama

UNITED States President Barack Obama says his twice delayed trip to Indonesia is going to happen.

His trip to the most populous Muslim nation is tied with a trip to Australia but he made no specific mention of Australia.

Domestic emergencies including the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill have kept Mr Obama from visiting previously.

Mr Obama held a bilateral meeting with Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on the sidelines of Toronto's G20 meeting.

"Because of the crisis that we've had in the Gulf, I've had to delay the trip," Mr Obama told reporters at G20.

"But graciously, for a second time now, the president has re-extended the invitation, and I am confident that we are going to get there."

'Bird man' faces court for sitting in tree

A MAN in southwestern China who lived in a eucalyptus tree for more than three months to protest the planned demolition of his home is being tried for disturbing public order.

Chen Maoguo was dubbed the "bird man" for his tree-top sit-in last year in the Chongqing region, staged to protest what he considered inadequate compensation for the razing of his home, the Yunnan Information News said.

His home was one of many to be knocked down to make way for a shopping mall in Fengjie county.

However, his unusual protest beginning last August attracted crowds and media attention, leading to his arrest in November for disturbing public order, said the report, posted on the popular Chinese web portal Sina.com.

During his demonstration, Mr Chen pulled all of his food, water, clothing and other needs up by rope into the small makeshift shelter he constructed in a eucalyptus tree, it said.

The report said Mr Chen was to appear in a local court today. It did not say how old Mr Chen was, or what penalties he could face.

Land seizures, often involving corrupt officials and businesses eyeing real estate profits, have been a growing source of unrest in China.

The problem stirred an uproar last year as a property boom and resulting rash of mass evictions caused a number of violent clashes, protests and even suicides by stubborn homeowners.

Murder Victim's Dad -- OJ Simpson Butchered My Son ... NOT Florida Serial Killer

Murder Victim's Dad
OJ Simpson Killed My Son
... NOT Florida Serial Killer

EXCLUSIVE

1118-oj-simpson-glen-rogers-ap
The father of one of OJ Simpson's victims doesn't believe an alleged confession by a death-row serial killer -- who's now taking credit for the Nicole Brown/Ron Goldman murders -- telling TMZ, OJ's still guilty guilty guilty.

In case you didn't know, a famed serial killer named Glen Rogers -- who's currently on death row in Florida -- has allegedly confessed to murdering Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman ... claiming OJ paid him to break into Nicole's home and steal $20,000 in jewelry ... and kill her if necessary.

The "confession" is the subject of a new Discovery Channel documentary airing this week -- butRon's dad Fred Goldman (a prominent figure in the 1995 OJ trial) insists it's just a BS story to market the show.

1119-fred-goldman-getty
Fred says, "OJ Simpson murdered Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. The criminal trial showed overwhelming and monumental evidence that OJ Simpson was the killer. There was no contrary evidence other than guess, innuendo, and rumor."

Fred adds, "The fact of the acquittal at the hands of the jury will never wash away this murder from the hands of OJ Simpson, no matter how many Glen Rogers pop up on the media radar screen."

Fred and his lawyer, David Cook, add, "Nothing would change the fact that OJ Simpson murdered these people in cold blood."

For the record -- OJ did it.

Israel 'deflects 44 million cyber-attacks'

Anonymous

THE Israeli government has admitted it to being the victim of a mass cyber-warfare campaign with millions of attempts to hack state websites since the start of its Gaza offensive four days ago.

Speaking ahead of the weekly cabinet meeting, Israeli Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said the government was now waging war on "a second front - of cyber-attacks against Israel".

Mr Steinitz said in the past four days, Israel had "deflected 44 million cyber-attacks on government websites. All the attacks were thwarted except for one, which targeted a specific website that was down for six or seven minutes."

His remarks came a day after the online activist group Anonymous claimed to have downed dozens of websites of Israeli state agencies and a top bank in protest over the Jewish state's deadly air assault.

It also comes as both Israel and the Palestinians try exploiting the social networks in a furious effort to win over public opinion amid the worst outbreak of Middle East violence in four years.

Mr Steinitz did not say who was responsible, but said the government had successfully managed to deflect almost every attack, thereby avoiding serious disruption or other damage.

On Saturday, Anonymous claimed to have downed or erased the databases of nearly 700 Israeli private and public websites, including that of the Bank of Jerusalem finance house.

It also claimed to have briefly downed the foreign ministry website in protest over an alleged Israeli threat to cut the Gaza Strip's Internet communications.

"For far too long, Anonymous has stood by with the rest of the world and watched in despair the barbaric, brutal and despicable treatment of the Palestinian people in the so called 'Occupied Territories' by the Israel Defence Force," Anonymous said in a statement.

"But when the government of Israel publicly threatened to sever all internet and other telecommunications into and out of Gaza they crossed a line in the sand."

Mr Steinitz made no direct reference to Anonymous and failed to specify if the government was dealing with a coordinated attack. He also refused to disclose which countries these efforts were being conducted from.

But the minister stressed that the government had come up with backup for "essential websites" should they be taken down.

"This is an unprecedented attack, and our success has been greater than we anticipated," Mr Steinitz said.

More discounts leak ahead of Click Frenzy

online shopping

Retailers increasingly see online shopping as being where it's at. Source: The Courier-Mail

MORE specials have leaked from Australia's first nationwide online sale, including discounted television sets and music downloads.

But overseas competition is heating up prior to Click Frenzy's local launch, with America's Cyber Monday and Black Friday specials already appearing and predictions that more than half of all American consumers will venture online for bargains.

Australia's Click Frenzy event, which begins on Tuesday at 7pm AEDT, will feature specials from more than 200 retailers, including Myer, Dick Smith, Westfield, Jeans West, Bonds and Toys `R Us.

The specials are not due to be publicised until the sale begins, but online retailer Kogan has aired some of its bargains early, including a 46-inch TV for $499 (33 per cent off) and 22-inch TV with built-in personal video recorder for $139 (26 per cent off).

Telstra also unveiled two of its Click Frenzy specials - half-price on all BigPond Music albums and half-price bed linen on its BigPond Shopping website.

But America's Cyber Monday sales event, on which Click Frenzy is modelled, will be held next Tuesday, Australian time, and the local version will have to offer big discounts to compete. American holiday specials already revealed include a 7-inch Samsung tablet for $US179 at Best Buy, Beats Solo HD headphones for $US179 at Target, and a 250GB Xbox 360 console with Call of Duty: Black Ops II for $US249.

Australians may not be able to buy all deals directly, though can use a mail-forwarding service to participate.

Research firm Radium One predicted that 57 per cent of US consumers would participate in the Cyber Monday event, spending as much as $1.4 billion online in just 24 hours.

But financial counselling service MoneyHelp yesterday warned buyers from either event to take their time before adding items to virtual shopping carts to avoid pre-Christmas over-commitment.

"This type of marketing is designed to get you to make on-the-spot decisions," advice services manager Penelope Hill said.

"All we're saying is take a deep breath before typing in your credit card details and consider your financial position before buying."

Ms Hill said bargains could lose their value if purchased with credit cards that attracted high interest.

FIVE TIPS FOR CLICK FRENZY

- Register at clickfrenzy.com.au before the sale begins

- Check the time: the sale goes live at 7pm Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time

- Buyers will be directed to retailers' websites: look for the lock icon in the address bar for security

- The sale lasts for 24 hours: consider your purchases carefully

- Consider delivery dates at check-out to ensure pre-Christmas arrival

Protesters swamp Hong Kong streets

HONG Kong's biggest protest for nearly a decade has packed the former British colony's streets in a defiant reception for its new leader and a show of popular anger after 15 years of Chinese rule.

The rally came after Leung Chun-ying, a millionaire property consultant seen as close to China's communist authorities, was sworn in as chief executive in front of Chinese President Hu Jintao - who had his speech interrupted on Sunday.

Hu's visit and Leung's inauguration have become focal points for growing discontent towards Beijing, which has surged to a new post-handover high amid soaring housing costs, limited democracy and perceived meddling by China.

"Hong Kong has become much worse off," Eric Lai of the Civil Human Rights Front told the marchers. "Our rights are under serious threat."

Organisers put the crowd at 400,000, their largest claimed turnout for eight years.

In sweltering heat the last of the marchers reached their destination almost six hours after the first set out, and along the way they blocked streets far across the city, stranding buses and trams as they surrounded them.

Hong Kong does not yet choose its leader by universal suffrage, and Leung was elected as chief executive in March by a committee stacked with pro-Beijing business elites.

A spokesman for the Hong Kong government said it "fully respected" freedom of expression and the right to "take part in processions", and would listen to the demonstrators' views "in a humble manner".

Earlier, as President Hu began his speech to around 2300 guests at Leung's inauguration, a protester inside the harbour-front venue repeatedly shouted "End one-party rule".

The man also referred to the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 in Beijing, and was rapidly bundled away by security personnel, while the audience drowned him out with extended applause for Hu.

Beijing's support for "one country, two systems" and the right of Hong Kongers to rule the territory was "unwavering", said Hu.

"We will follow the Basic Law ... to continue to advance democratic development in Hong Kong," said the president, who will step down as part of a once-in-a-decade leadership transition in Beijing starting later this year.

Late on Sunday some 300 protesters held a demonstration outside the Beijing representative office in Hong Kong, burning copies of the city's mini-constitution before dispersing around midnight.

Craig to become highest-paid Bond

Skyfall premiere

DANIEL Craig will become the highest-paid James Bond actor after signing on for two more films as the famous British spy.

Craig, 44, who is in Australia driving the release of Skyfall - his latest outing as 007 - will be paid 31 million pounds ($48 million) to star in two more titles of the 50-year-old franchise, London's Sunday Times reports.

As Skyfall continues to prove itself a box office scorcher around the globe, plans are under way for a 2014 release of the next 007 instalment, followed in 2016 by Craig's fifth turn in the tuxedo.

Craig's pay packet has taken a steep climb since he first appeared as Bond in the 2006 flick Casino Royale, for which he received 3 million pounds, the newspaper reported.

Quantum of Solace, 2008, brought in 7 million pounds for the MI6 tough guy role, while Craig has collected 17 million pounds for his latest appearance.

Craig's 007 predecessor Pierce Brosnan earned up to $US16.5 million ($16 million) for his third and final Bond film, Die Another Day.

Sean Connery, the original Bond, was paid an average of 218,000 pounds for each film, equating to about 3.2 million pounds in 2012 terms.

The same calculations saw Australian George Lazenby paid 468,000 pounds for his one-off appearance, Roger Moore earn a 6.3 million pounds on average per film and Timothy Dalton pocket 5.4 million pounds per film for his efforts.

The latest deal offered to Craig will see him earn a 9.6 million pounds on average for each of his five bond films.

Bride gives birth at wedding

A BRIDE gave birth only minutes after tying the knot in France, making it more of a "big day" than anticipated.

"It did rather shake us up," admitted Jean-Robert Gachet, mayor of Jallais, after hearing that mother and baby were doing well.

Saturday's ceremony at 11am (7pm AEST) was nearly called off after the heavily pregnant bride had several false alarms, although her due date was July 14.

The bride was "definitely a bit worn out, but we put that down to the stress of the wedding. I tried to hurry it up a bit so that she didn't get too tired," said Mr Gachet.

But only moments after the happy couple said their vows and emerged outside to pose for the traditional photos, while the guests left for the reception, the bride suddenly felt unwell and went back into the town hall.

Emergency services were called, but her waters had already broken and she gave birth to a little boy on the spot at 12.15pm.

"The cry of the new born boy was an emotional moment! It was a first for us and for the emergency services," Mr Gachet said.

'Red Shirt' to run for Thai government

A THAI protest leader accused of terrorism was released from prison briefly to apply to run in a by-election seen as a key test of the opposition's prospects of success in nationwide polls.

Kokaew Pikulthong, a senior "Red Shirt" involved in the mass rally in Bangkok that ended last month, will stand against incumbent Panich Vikitsreth of the ruling Democrat Party in the July 25 vote in the capital.

A Thai court last week granted permission for Kokaew, the candidate of the main opposition Puea Thai Party, to be released temporarily from Bangkok Remand Prison to register to challenge Panich, a vice foreign minister.

Mr Kokaew, who has not been convicted of any crimes relating to his role in the two-month-long street protest, was later returned to detention, but is expected to seek permission to be released again to campaign for votes.

The Red Shirts' rally, which at its peak attracted up to about 100,000 people demanding immediate elections, sparked outbreaks of violence that left 90 people dead, mostly civilians, and nearly 1900 injured.

Enraged protesters set fire to dozens of major buildings after the army crushed the demonstration by the mostly poor and working class Reds with an assault on their vast fortified encampment in central Bangkok on May 19.

The Red Shirts were campaigning for elections they hoped would oust the government, which they view as undemocratic because it came to power with the backing of the army after a court ruling threw out the previous administration.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva proposed November polls in a bid to end the crippling protests, but shelved the plan because the Reds -- many of whom seek the return of fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra -- refused to disperse.

Mr Abhisit, whose government was elected by parliamentary vote in 2008 and enjoys support among the Bangkok-based elite, must call nationwide elections by the end of next year at the latest.

Many of the Red Shirt leaders are in jail facing terrorism charges for their roles in the unrest. The government has rejected the opposition's call for a state of emergency to be lifted in the capital for the by-election.

YO! make my flat into a palace

YO! Home

The concept home shows the robotic bed lifting above the living area. Clearing space below. Picture: YO! Home Source: Supplied

  • VIDEO from the unveiling of a new concept home.
  • House turns a regular flat into a decked-out city palace.
  • Aspires to achieve sleek and simple modern living in a fraction of the size.

NOW there's no need to move out of the city with a new house that promises to turn a humble flat into a palace. The makers of YO! Sushi and YOtel have come up with a brand new concept home which promises to fit nine separate spaces into a one-bedroom flat.

Ever wanted to get more bang for your buck when it comes to apartment living? A new concept home has been released which squeezes more features than most houses into the space the same size as a one bedroom apartment.

Change your furnishings and rooms at the flick of a switch.

At the pull of a wall, the opening of a floor or the press of a button, the space provides: a master bedroom suite; a second bedroom; a sunken sitting room; a cinema; a dining room; an office; a full-sized kitchen; a breakfast room; a bathroom with spa; a party room; a wine cellar and additional hidden storage.

YO! Home

The full-sized bathroom even includes a hot-tub. Picture: YO! Home

Flashbacks of murphy beds and bachelor pads aside, the home aspires to achieve sleek and simple modern living in an area a fraction of the size of a regular house.

YO! Home

The room turns into a casual entertaining area with the flick of a switch. Picture: YO! Home

With just twelve moving parts the space is transformed using engineering technology taken from yacht, automotive design and stage production.

YO! Home

No kitchenette here! The full-sized kitchen and eating area hugs the wall. Picture: YO! Home

According to the home's makers: "The basic principals of counter-weights and moving parts, allowing safe, easy and low-energy movement of large elements such as the bed and wall. More high-tech elements, such as sensors and electronics, will make the concept easy to use and family-proof.

YO! Home

Hidden storage and a wine cellar can be accessed under the floor. Picture: YO! Home

"Influenced by principals of Japanese living, where the simple and adaptable layout of rooms allows many activities to take place in the same space."

YO! Home

The one bedroom flat is transformed into a surprisingly spacious living area. Picture: YO! Home

Pricing for the concept home has not yet been released. Representatives from YO! Home stressed, however, that he does not want it to be so expensive that you could just afford a larger home.

Also that a YO! Home would also come with all of the furniture you would need which would save on overall costs.

"The homes can also be as simple or complex as you wish which affects the price."

We do have to wonder, though, is the champagne included?

Five apps to get you fit and healthy for summer

smartphone

You can use a fitness app to help get you off the couch and out running. Picture: Mike Keating Source: Herald Sun

WITH summer just weeks away, the countdown for that beach-ready body has begun.

But many of us can't afford a personal trainer and, with life increasingly busy, we struggle to get to the gym. But don't worry, there's an app for that.

If you are new to exercise and find it difficult to get started, or simply need help counting the calories, developers have come up with ways to help.

Here?s our guide to the best technology to help get you moving, fit and healthy.

1. C25k - Couch to 5km
Price: Free
Available: iPhone and android
Star rating: ****

Struggling to get off the couch? The C25k app may be just what you need to kick start your exercise routine. It's a really simple running app which helps you slowly build up from not running at all to 5km. You have the option of building up to 5km over eight weeks (30 mins a day, three days a week) or you can go hard and skip straight to the 5km. Voice prompts tell you when to warm up, walk and run. Great if you haven?t done any exercise in a while. Although the user interface is friendly and simple, the app itself is a bit ugly - but that shouldn?t stop you from getting off the couch.

Cool features: C25K supports The Breast Cancer Research Foundation

2. Calorie Counter and Diet tracker by myfitnesspal
Price: Free
Available: iPhone, android, windows phones, blackberry
Star rating: ****

Calorie Counter and Diet Tracker is one of the best in its class. The sign up process is cumbersome, but it is worth it as this app claims to have the largest food database of any calorie counter. The food diary lets you record your food intake, track your weight loss and provides a daily progress report. With more than 30 million users it is one of the few apps that is available and works seamlessly across IOS, Android, Blackberry, Kindle and Windows. It also syncs with the web. It has been cleverly created with an application programming interface (API) so that it can integrate with fitness apps ? automating the process of inputting your exercise. It integrates with popular apps such as runkeeper, fitbit tracker and Endomondo sports, and is leading the way for super apps.

Cool features: Diet with friends and a barcode scanner to add food items to your diary

3. Workout Trainer
Price: Free
Available: iPhone, android, windows phones
My star rating: ***

Now you're up and moving, it is time to get serious. Workout Trainer is a pretty cool all-round training app. It?s essentially a virtual personal trainer with step-by-step audio and visual guides. It?s a pretty busy app, and has some slightly annoying features, such as the cheesy photographs, the professional trainers? voice and the constant ?upgrade now ... buy this?. But, that said, the exercises, instructions and technique tips are really good. It also integrates with Apple TV.

Cool features: Half way through my workout, it tells me to "stay focused". I feel like it knows me.

4. Pocket Yoga
Price: ($2.99)
Available: iPhone and android
My star rating: ***

There are a number of apps for practicing yoga, both free and for pay, but Pocket Yoga is the best as it seems to do it all. It guides you through your yoga practice with visual instructions and relaxing yoga music. It has three different practices, three difficulty levels and three durations. You can play music from your iPod library in place of the default music, and it allows you to log your yoga practices to track progress. Not being able to easily fast forward through a practice is frustrating, but then that is probably the whole point.

Cool feature: The most appealing of the yoga apps, with 27 different sessions

5. Waterlogged
Price: Free
Available: IPhone
My star rating: ****

After all that working out make sure you hydrate. Waterlogged is an alerts and tracking app that reminds you to drink water and tracks your water intact. It really does do exactly what it says on the tin. Just be aware that the alert sounds like someone going to the toilet, which can be slightly embarrassing when sitting in a quiet office.

Cool features: It always gets an awkward giggle when the alert goes off in a meeting

Carr welcomes lawyer's release

Foreign Minister Bob Carr has confirmed Australian lawyer Melinda Taylor is set to be released by 9pm Monday AEST.

Detained Australian lawyer Melinda Taylor has finally been allowed to make contact with her family.

Melinda Taylor ICC Libya

UPDATE: THE federal government has welcomed news Libyan authorities are expected to release Australian lawyer Melinda Taylor later today.

A spokesman for Foreign Minister Bob Carr said "all going well" the International Criminal Court lawyer will be released into the custody of Australian officials tonight and will board a plane bound for Europe by midnight.

"We welcome the news that she is likely to be released today," the spokesman told AAP from New York.

"We thank the Libyan authorities for their cooperation."

Australia also thanks the wider international community for their help and support, the spokesman said.

Ms Taylor is likely to be taken to Rome before her onward journey to her home in The Hague.

Ms Taylor, along with three of her ICC colleagues, was detained in the Libyan city of Zintan on June 7 while representing Seif al-Islam, the son of the former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Libyan officials said she was found carrying documents for Seif that were judged a threat to national security.

Senator Carr has lobbied hard for her release, even visiting the Libyan capital Tripoli last month to press her case.

Ms Taylor was not able to speak to her husband and young daughter until last week.

Senator Carr said Ms Taylor was permitted to call her home in The Hague shortly after a visit by Australia's ambassador David Ritchie.

Mr Carr subsequently spoke to Ms Taylor's Brisbane-based parents John and Janelle, who were relieved to hear she was finally allowed a phone call.

Her parents had pleaded with Libya to release their daughter in time for her toddler's third birthday in July.

The three other detained ICC staffers are from Lebanon, Russia and Spain.

Mr Carr said a week ago that talks in The Hague between the ICC and the Libyan authorities had resulted in "the ICC expressing regret, effectively an apology for any misunderstandings".

The ICC has stopped short of admitting to any wrongdoing but has said it will fully investigate its team's behaviour upon their return.

"When the ICC has completed its investigation, the Court will ensure that anyone found responsible for any misconduct will be subject to appropriate sanctions," it added in a statement issued last month.

The ICC wants to try Seif al-Islam, 39, for crimes against humanity during his father's rule, which came to an abrupt end last year.

Tripoli insists he should be tried locally and filed on May 1 a motion challenging the ICC's jurisdiction to put him on trial in The Hague.

Tripoli insists he should be tried locally and filed on May 1 a motion challenging the ICC's jurisdiction to put him on trial in The Hague.

Jennifer Hawkins busted in the bus lane

Jennifer Hawkins

Busted ... Jennifer Hawkins. Source: The Daily Telegraph

JENNIFER Hawkins' incredible streak of good luck looked to have run dry last week when she was pulled over by police after being busted driving in a bus lane at The Spit.

North Shore locals could scarcely believe their eyes as the window came down on the big Range Rover to reveal a coy looking Hawkins, who was offering a cute apologetic smile from behind the wheel.

While she was uncontactable yesterday, sources report she looked to be doing a fairly reasonable job of talking her way out of a ticket with a young policeman described by witnesses as "very good looking".

Meanwhile Hawkins could well prove the heiress to Sarah Murdoch's throne when Foxtel announces the new host of Australia's Next Top Model on Monday.

Having initially approached to Liz Hurley and Miranda Kerr - Elle Macpherson also rumoured to have been on producer's wish list - it looks as though the job will go to another Aussie model with Hawkins topping a list of contenders also said to include Nicole Trunfio, Jessica Gomes and, surprisingly, Cheyenne Tozzi.

Residents return to burnt homes

The US is in the grip of weather-related disasters from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Coast.

UPDATE: PEOPLE who fled the most destructive fire in Colorado's history have visited the most devastated neighbourhood, and many found their homes among the nearly 350 burned to the ground.

Two bodies were found in the ruins lifting the death toll to 17.

Residents marvelled at the random path of disaster.

Nothing remained of CJ Moore's home but the concrete, but the letters in her mailbox were unscathed.

''It's just unreal. Unreal,'' she said.

''Good Lord! I've never seen anything like this. And thank God there was nobody there.''

Nearby cars were burned to nothing but charred metal, but three neighbours' homes were untouched.

Melted bowling balls were scattered in Moore's front yard.

About 7000 people will be allowed to return to their homes for good on Sunday night local time.

That would leave about 3000 still evacuated, down from more than 30,000 at the peak of the Waldo Canyon fire in Colorado Springs.

The fire was 45 per cent contained late on Sunday night local time after a long week of shifting winds that frustrated firefighters.

It was one of many burning across the West, including eight in Utah and a fast-growing blaze in Montana that forced residents in several small communities to leave.

Authorities at the Colorado Springs fire said they are confident they have stopped flames from spreading.

''We're cautiously optimistic,'' incident commander Rich Harvey said on Sunday.

''We still remain focused on things that could go wrong.''

The two victims' names haven't been released.

Police Chief Pete Carey said on Saturday an estimated 10 people who had been unaccounted for had been located.

Investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the fire that broke out on June 23, and which so far has cost $US8.8 million ($A8.61 million) to battle.

Dangerous conditions had kept them from beginning their inquiry.

Meanwhile, more than three million people in the eastern US are facing a second day of 40 degree temperatures without electricity after storms ripped through the region.

It could be several days before all power outages in Washington, DC, and elsewhere are restored, officials say and the National Weather Service says more thunderstorms are possible.

"Unlike a polite hurricane that gives you three days of warning, this storm gave us all the impact of a hurricane without any of the warning of a hurricane," Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley said.

Mobile phone and internet service remain affected, petrol stations were shut down and residents have been urged to conserve water. Some major online services also saw delays and disruptions.

In Colorado, firefighters have contained about 45 per cent of the Waldo Canyon fire outside Colorado Springs, according to the Denver Post.

Temperatures shot back above 37C in many areas, prompting the US National Weather Service to warn of the prospect of severe thunderstorms including large hail and damaging winds.

"Cities from St. Louis, Missouri to Washington DC are forecast to approach or break daily record high temperatures for yet another day and there may be more all-time records broken," added AccuWeather, a private weather service.

Pepco, the utility that serves Washington and some of its suburbs, said it may be a full week before service is restored to all its customers by teams of linesmen that included reinforcements from as far as Oklahoma and Florida.

"The devastation is extensive and while we expect to have the vast majority of customers restored by the end of day Friday, restoration for some customers may extend into the weekend," Pepco regional president Thomas Graham said.

Local authorities in Washington put out a hyperthermia alert, saying the heat index - which is the thermometer reading adjusted to take humidity into account - in the afternoon was 101 degrees fahrenheit (38C).

"Cooling centers" remained opened in many urban areas as refuges for those - notably the elderly - unable to cope without air conditioning, and at least one major supermarket chain gave away free ice to all comers.

The District of Columbia's emergency management agency suggested going to a movie or a museum in order to beat the heat. "Bottom line is, stay (as) hydrated and cool as possible," it said on its Twitter feed.

Some 3.7 million homes lost power in Friday's storms and four states - Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Ohio - declared states of emergency.

"The power is slowly coming back on line," West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomlin told CNN on Sunday, adding however that "we still have over half a million people without power."

"We just once again ask people to be patient," he said. "It's going to take a few days."

In Baltimore, Maryland, the local Baltimore Gas and Electric utility said it had deployed 1,000 trucks to restore power to 306,000 customers in and around the major port city.

Storm debris was gone from major highways in the region, but downed branches and trees still littered secondary routes.

Responsible for the extreme early-summer weather has been a high pressure area parked over the southeastern United States - the same slow-moving weather system blamed for a fatal wildfire in Colorado earlier in the week.

Firefighters supported by water bombers managed over the weekend to contain much of the Waldo Canyon inferno that killed three people, destroyed nearly 350 residences and left many hundreds homeless.

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, speaking Sunday on CNN, said it felt as if the worst was over. "But we also know that Mother Nature will be fickle out here," he added. "We're keeping ourselves very alert."

President Barack Obama visited Colorado on Friday to see the devastation first-hand and to praise "the courage and determination and professionalism" of those fighting the flames.

Is this the end for Rhonda and Ketut?

Is there something going on between Rhonda and Ketut? Watch this AAMI ad and decide for yourself.

HAS Australia seen the last of Rhonda and Ketut?

That is a possibility after comments from AAMI insurance marketing manager Richard Riboni today.

Mr Riboni has told the Mumbrella media and marketing site that he is undecided about the future of the Rhonda 'safe driver' advertising campaign.

Rhonda is played by actress Mandy McElhinney who is pursuing a serious acting career.

McElhinney appeared in Kerry Packer's secretary in the Howzat! telemovie.

If the AAMI ad were to become a musical as Anthony Sharwood suggests, see what we think the promo would be.

Ten classic Australian ad campaigns

Next up she stars as magazine editor Nene King in Magazine Wars, the sequel to Paper Giants.

"Mandy is a well-known actor, and her career is taking off,'' Mr Riboni told Mumbrella.

"We have to work with her schedule, if we want to use her more in the future.''

rhonda

The Rhonda and Ketut romance has become a social media phenomenon.

Mr Riboni has revealed that the Rhonda/Ketut campaign isn't universally popular. He is also worried about overkill.

"It's a balancing act to leverage the positive public sentiment towards Rhonda, while being careful not to take advantage of it,'' he says.

McElhinney recently told News Limited that she was happy to continue playing Rhonda in the short term.

"It (over-exposure as Rhonda) was one of the concerns when I started but I think people are intelligent enough to know it's a character,'' McElhinney said.

"I wouldn't want to saturate it and keep doing Rhonda forever but at the moment it doesn't feel like it's interfering with things.''

Bali hotel employee Ketut is played by part-time Melbourne forklift driver Kadek Mahardika.

The Rhonda 'safe driver' campaign has lasted just over a year. The initial Rhonda advertisement aired in October 2011 with Ketut making his first appearance last March.

The Rhonda/Ketut romance has become a social media phenomenon.

A Facebook page dedicated to Rhonda and Ketut has more than 115,000 'likes'. Rhonda T-shirts are now being sold in Bali.

Children, 6, fight over Facebook

Children fight

Liberal MP Paul Fletcher says a principal was forced to break up a fight over Facebook between six-year-old children. Source: Supplied

TEACHERS have been forced to break up Facebook fights between children as young as six while some teenagers are secretly running two Facebook accounts so they can keep one hidden from mum and dad.

And parents say the explosion in the number of internet-enabled devices in the home makes them feel like they are running the IT department of a small company, according to research by the federal Opposition.

Some children have been victims of classmates setting up fake Facebook accounts and using them to attack other students and teachers.

Parents have found their child playing games with unmoderated chat rooms and chidren say they don't tell parents about cyber bullying because they fear they will be cut off from their computer.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott will today seek to tackle rising concern about the reach of social media and internet devices by announcing policy options and seeking feedback.

Former high-ranking Optus executive Paul Fletcher, who is now a Liberal MP, has led an Opposition study into the issue. He says these devices have a presence in the lounge rooms and bedrooms of the nation equal to the television and telephone.

Options include requiring social media outlets like Facebook to have rapid removal of content harmful to children, especially in cases of bullying.

There could also be national rules for smartphones to have a symbol showing if they are suitable for children, a commissioner to certify online safety programs for school and more resources for federal police.

"This is a real challenge for parents to keep up with their kids and this technology," Mr Fletcher told the Herald Sun.

"Parents are under pressure and schools and teachers are also facing a major new area of responsibility."

Mr Fletcher said a principal had been forced to break up a fight over Facebook between six-year-old children while some teenagers had been found to have two Facebook accounts with one being a sanitised version for mum and dad.

Mr Fletcher said while many children were confident users of technology that did not mean they had the judgment to assess risks.

Mr Fletcher said there should me more "corporate social responsibility" from companies.
