LINDSAY Lohan will spend the next two weeks cleaning up after autopsies after a judge slammed her for violating her probation.

The Mean Girls star was led away from court in handcuffs and in tears after Judge Stephanie Sautner found she had failed to turn up for her scheduled appointments at the Downtown Women's Centre in Los Angeles.

She must now spend 16 hours working in the Los Angeles morgue before her next court appearance in November.

Though she won?t be handling any dead bodies during her time at the morgue, Lohan will be have to clean autopsy tables where various body parts and fluids often remain for disposal, TMZ reports.

Setting bail at $US100,000, Judge Sautner said: "Probation is a gift not a right.

"Nine scheduled community service appointments were just blown off."

The actress posted bail less than an hour after leaving court, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Dressed in all white, Lohan did not speak and appeared solemn through most of the progress hearing today, in which a prosecutor asked that the actress be jailed.

A new probation violation hearing was set for November 2 and prosecutors could again push for jail time.

The troubled actress was originally sentenced to 480 hours of community service after pleading no contest earlier this year to taking a $US2500 necklace from a Los Angeles boutique.

As of today, Lohan has completed three of the 60 days of community service she is legally mandated to serve. Her service was to be done at the Downtown Women's Centre and the Los Angeles County Morgue.

Lohan's lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, told the court that the actress has a full year to complete her sentence, adding that Lohan is making progress and has demonstrated "a turning point in her maturity".

Judge Sautner dismissed that argument, saying "failure to show up nine times to Downtown Women's Centre indicates a turning point in her maturity?"

Ms Holley also said Lohan has been travelling for work to New York and Milan, and that her absences were mostly excused.

Judge Sautner also lambasted the Los Angeles probation office for reassigning Lohan to the Red Cross after she was fired from the Downtown Women's Centre.

"That was not my sentence," the judge said, adding the hours Lohan served at the Red Cross will not count toward her community service hours.

Judge Sautner also ordered Lohan to complete 16 hours at the morgue before the November 2 court date. Lohan also must undergo psychological counselling and complete a Shoplifters Alternative Course.

She spent 35 days under house arrest this summer as part of her sentence for the shoplifting offence, during which her probation officers slammed her for hosting a rooftop party for friends.
