- Hit-and-run toddler dies from horrific injuries
- Footage of the accident went viral, sparked outrage
- Girl's death debated on world's social media
A TODDLER who was twice run over by vans and ignored by passers-by on a busy street in southern China has died a week after the accident, and following days of bitter soul-searching in the country.
Chinese toddler Wang Yue, 2, was walking up a quiet lane in Guangdong Province when she was hit by a white van last week.
The shocking footage, which went viral around the world, shows the driver stopping, before continuing on his way, crushing her for a second time.
Some passers-by, including pedestrians, cyclists and even a mother, even altered their course to avoid the stricken toddler, who lies there helpless bleeding to death.
The youngster was callously ignored by the next 18 passers-by in the city of Foshan.
Today a nurse in the intensive care unit of the Guangzhou Military District General Hospital confirmed that the little girl had lost her battle for life.
She declined to reveal the cause of death, saying it would be announced later.
The plight of the child came to symbolise what many Chinese saw as a decay in public morals after decades of headlong pursuit of economic growth.
Her death touched off another round of hand-wringing. Many comments posted to social media sites said "we are all passers-by".
The incident has left millions around China and the world shocked and prompted the child's stunned father to lash out on national television just days ago.
"What?s up with people these days? They make so many excuses to turn a blind eye," he said.
"The society is so indifferent, so heartless.
"I don?t have any thoughts now, I just hope my child will wake up and call me Dad again."
