Aussie developer takes Siri-ous initiative

HOW do you get Siri to do your bidding if you don't have an iPhone?

Sydney app outfit Remember The Milk have been working on a solution, Fairfax media reports.

Siri has been one of the huge talking points from the release of the iPhone 4S, but the voice recognition technology is only compatible thus far with Apple apps.

Task manager Remember The Milk has figured out how to use Siri to do its bidding, using the technology to help turn all phones into a personal assistant.

Developer Omar Kilani said opening up Siri to Remember the Milk was a difficult process.

"I think everyone wants it to open up [to third-party developers] but I think the issue is it's actually a really hard problem to solve," he said.

"What if you have two apps that do the same thing and they want to register for the same action word? How does that work?

"The difficulty was just trying to figure out what exactly was required on our end to do it, and how to configure the system so Siri will let you add directly into that list. It's not obvious stuff."
