KYLIE as a pearly queen. Robbie in military colours. Grace Jones in ... er, hula hoop.

The Royals took their seats for the star-studded Diamond Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace, but without Prince Philip, who was taken to hospital with a bladder infection.

The tribute to the Queen was overshadowed by the announcement, with the prince said to be "disappointed" at not being able to attend the show.

Paul McCartney, who closed the concert, wished Philip well, saying: "We all send our best wishes for a speedy recovery. I hear he's not too bad."

Take That star Robbie Williams opened the show by belting out one of his biggest hits, the aptly-named Let Me Entertain You.

Performers from the present generation also appeared on stage - Will.i.am Jessie J, JLS and Ed Sheeran. But it was the veterans Cliff Richard and Tom Jones who got the crowds on their feet with renditions of classic songs from their repertoire.

One of the most bizarre performances came as style queen Grace Jones performed her entire hit Slave to the Rhythm with a hula hoop, without it slipping. The star - wearing a black and red headdress throughout - kept going for four minutes, before letting it fall to the floor at the end of the song and bellowing: "We love you - happy birthday, our Queen."

Kylie Minogue went the full cockney, singing her biggest hits in a sexy pearly queen hat and bodice. She had earlier tweeted a photo of herself in a distinctly enormous plastic poncho as she waited backstage during rehearsals.

Prince Charles ended the concert with a moving tribute to his mother, saying: "Thanks for making us all so proud to be British."

Nine will show the Diamond Jubilee Concert at 8pm (AEST).
