Australia-Philippine treaty vote delayed

Lifeline

OPPONENTS have delayed a Philippine senate vote that would have ratified a treaty to allow Australian troops to hold combat exercises with Filipino troops in the country.

Two opposition senators cited a legal technicality in blocking a final vote today. Congress starts a month-long break tomorrow.

The Philippines only has one such security accord with the United States.

Proponents say the accord will help the Philippines battle terrorists but critics fear it can drag the country in conflicts involving the US and Australia.

Australia ratified the treaty some years ago.
