The New York Rangers moved ahead in their NHL play-off series with the Washington Captials thanks to a 3-2 comeback win on Monday night.

The Rangers trailed 2-1 with just seconds of regulation play remaining at Madison Square Garden but a last-gasp equaliser from Brad Richards was following by Marc Staal's overtime strike to give them the win.

They now lead the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semi-final 3-2.

The Capitals looked to be on course for the win when goals from Brooks Laich and John Carlson overturned Anton Stralman's first-period opener.

But Richards tied the game with seven seconds left and then Staal lashed home a deflected winner on a powerplay 1:35 into overtime.

The top-seeded Rangers can close out the best-of-seven series with victory in game six in Washington on Wednesday.

In the Western Conference semi-finals, the Phoenix Coyotes clinched a 4-1 series success with a narrow 2-1 win over the Nashville Predators.

Second-period goals from Derek Morris and Martin Hanzal proved decisive at the Jobing.com Arena, with goaltender Mike Smith making 32 saves for the victors.

The Coyotes will now face the Los Angeles Kings for a place in the Stanley Cup finals.
