Secret donor creates modern-day fairytale

Residents of the small German city of Braunschweig are baffled by a number of envelopes stuffed with cash which have been left at various charities around town, sparking talk of a modern day Robin Hood.

THE small German city of Braunschweig is in the grips of a mystery.

Envelopes stuffed with 500 euro notes (equivalent to AU$620) have been turning up at the offices of various charities around the town for the past week - and no-one knows who is leaving the money.

So far, a whopping 190,000 euros (AU$235, 500) has been found, prompting German press to call the anonymous donor a "modern day Robin Hood".

The money has been found under doors, in the pages of a church hymn book and even under a hospice's doormat.

One of the benefactors was Alfred Huge, Manager of the Braunschweig Meals on Wheels, who comments in the video above that "I'd like this person to reveal themselves so I could just look them in the eyes and say thank you."

But not everyone wants to donor to reveal him or herself. Local newspaper editor Henning Noske has asked people not to try to find the person responsible, just in case it stops the donations.

He said: "Maybe it is an old person who is about to die. We just do not know."

While the identity of the donor may never be known, the residents - and especially the charities of Braunschweig - certainly hope this fairytale story never comes to an end.
