Davy Jones? Death -- Revs Up Monkeemobile Mystery

0229-davy-jones_monkees_car_EX
The sudden death of Davy Jones today has re-opened the greatest mystery in television history -- what the hell happened to the infamous Monkeemobile??? And TMZ has the answer ...

For those of you under 55 ... the Monkeemobile is the modified Pontiac GTO made famous on the 1960s Monkees TV show -- and the second Davy died ... it became THE hot topic in the Monkees fan world.

Famed car customizer George Barris -- who built the car for the show -- tells TMZ, he's been getting calls non-stop ever since Davy passed away ... bombarded with questions like, ?Where is the car? Is it still available? Can we see it? Can we take a photo with it??

But there's one problem ... George doesn't have the car anymore -- he sold it at auction back in 2008 for roughly $500,000 ... to a Michigan man by the name of Mel Gutherie.

And Mel tells us, he's always open to fans taking pictures with the car -- but they better be willing to travel to the Midwest ... because he doesn't feel comfortable driving it very far. In fact, he had to have it TRUCKED to a Davy Jones concert in 2010, where Davy signed the hood (above).

Fun fact -- in approximately 40 years, the car has only racked up 8,000 miles.

FBI helping hunt for woman missing in Nepal

THE FBI says it's helping the US State Department in the investigation of a Colorado woman who disappeared while trekking alone in Nepal.

Denver FBI spokesman Dave Joly said today the agency was also working with Nepalese authorities on the disappearance of 23-year-old Aubrey Sacco of Greeley.

Ms Saccohas notbeen heard from since April 20, when she e-mailed her parents from Nepal. She planned to finish her trip around April 30.

Her father, Paul Sacco, told the Greeley Tribune that FBI agents had made two or three visits to his home.

Paul Sacco went to Nepal in May to look for his daughter.

He said he recovered her laptop computer and journal from a hotel.

Aubrey Sacco graduated from the University of Colorado last year.

Negus stuffs up apology to Aussie war hero

TV pair Yumi Stynes and George Negus's apologise to Ben Roberts-Smith | News.com.au

The Circle hosts George Negus and Yumi Stynes question Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith?s intelligence and sexual prowess.

GEORGE Negus has dug in over criticism of his offensive remarks on The Circle about Victoria Cross hero Ben Roberts-Smith.

But the long-serving journalist added insult to injury by getting SAS Corporal Roberts-Smith's rank wrong in his official apology.

The veteran broadcaster unwittingly upgraded Cpl Roberts-Smith to colonel.

Negus sparked a storm of condemnation when he questioned whether Cpl Roberts-Smith was "up to it in the sack" on the Channel 10 morning show, which displayed a picture of the war hero in a swimming pool.

Co-host Yumi Stynes said: "He's going to dive down to the bottom of the pool to see if his brain is there."

Both Negus and Stynes apologised on The Circle yesterday, in separate phone calls to Cpl Roberts-Smith and again on The Project last night, where they both also conceded they were anti-war.

Negus said on The Project that in his conversation with Cpl Roberts-Smith, "he didn't sound as though he thought I needed to make (an apology)".

Stynes admitted her comments were "uncool".

Negus said in a public statement yesterday that he meant no offence.

"I actually intended it to be a tongue-in-cheek quip about men generally with great bodies. In no way was it meant to be a comment or a reflection on Lt-Colonel Ben Roberts-Smith, directly or otherwise," he said.

The war hero, who won the VC for taking on a nest of Taliban commanders in June 2010, said he appreciated the concerns of Australians yesterday.

"I would like to thank the Australian public and Australian Defence Force personnel for their overwhelming support. My wife and I were extremely touched by the outpouring of support and concern," Cpl Roberts-Smith said.

"I have read the statements from both Yumi and George and they have both since contacted me directly to apologise for any offence caused.

"I have now put this matter behind me so I can focus on serving my country."

Vietnam War hero and Victoria Cross winner Keith Payne was horrified by the insulting comments aired about his fellow VC holder on the low-rating breakfast TV show.

Mr Payne said he expected better of Negus. "That is putting everything below the belt and that is not the old George," he said.

His wife, Flo, said she felt for Ben's wife and family.

"I would have hated to see something like that done with Keith, it is not on," Mrs Payne said.

Jennifer Ward, whose son, Ben Ranaudo, 22, was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2009, said the comments on Channel 10 were insulting.

"We can live without TV stars but we can't live without our heroes like Ben."

Queen to open Olympics

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh will open the Games

Sky Bet

Buckingham Palace have confirmed that the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will open the London Olympics in the summer.

A worldwide TV audience of over one billion people is expected to watch the royal couple open the Games at the 80,000-seater Olympic Stadium on July 27.

The Queen and Duke will also open the Paralympic Games at the same venue on August 29.

The Queen previously opened Canada's Montreal Games in 1976, while the Duke did it on her behalf at Melbourne, Australia, in 1956.

In 1948 - the last time the Olympics were held in the UK - King George VI opened the Games at Wembley Stadium.

And 40 years earlier his grandfather, King Edward VII, got proceedings under way at the first London Olympics at White City Stadium.

The 2012 opening ceremony's artistic director Danny Boyle said last month that it should make everyone feel like it is "the people's Games".

He said: "We would be very honoured if we are compared very favourably to Sydney (the 2000 Games) and this was another people's Games."

The sound of an enormous bell, set to be the biggest ringing bell in Europe, has been commissioned from a foundry in Whitechapel, east London, to kick off the proceedings.

Significance

Boyle has picked the title Isles of Wonder for his work on the ceremony, setting a target for himself to try to celebrate the best of British while representing all the regions.

This will be the first time the Queen has opened a Paralympic Games.

The 1984 Paralympic Games were officially opened by the Prince of Wales. These games were held in both Europe and North America, with the opening ceremony in Stoke Mandeville, Buckinghamshire - the birthplace of the Paralympic Games.

London 2012 chairman Lord Coe said: "This summer we will be hosting the largest Paralympic Games ever and the opening ceremony on August 29 will be a fantastic event.

"The Paralympic Games will undoubtedly be a time of extraordinary pride for our nation, and it is fitting that Her Majesty will declare us under way."

International Paralympic Committee president Sir Philip Craven said: "I am delighted that Her Majesty the Queen will be opening the Paralympic Games, further underlining the significance and status of these Games, not just to the Commonwealth but to the whole world."

Apple expected to reveal iPad 3 on March 7

iPad 3 invitation

Apple has emailed journalist inviting them to attend the unveiling of its third-generation iPad on March 7 in San Francisco. Source: The Australian

APPLE is expected to unveil a new version of the iPad at an event in San Francisco next week.

Invitations were sent out to news media in the US overnight an image showing part of an iPad screen.

The company had been widely expected to reveal the third version of its popular tablet computer soon, close to the anniversary of the launch of the iPad 2.

The invitation states ?We have something you really have to see. And touch.?

Tech sites are assuming the "touch" part refers to the iPad 3. Some, such as Mashable, claim the "see" part refers to a dual announcement which will include details of a new Apple TV "with a faster dual-core processor and strong video playback".

The event will take place on March 7 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater, where Apple holds larger launch events.

Apple didn't provide any details on the new device.

Various unconfirmed reports speak of a sharper screen and faster broadband options.

It's not known when such a new device would be available for sale.

Last year, sales of the iPad 2 began in the US nine days after the announcement.

Since the first iPad came out in 2010, sales of traditional computers have slowed in the US and other wealthy countries.

Rival PC and phone makers have been unable to mirror Apple's success with their own tablet computers.

Apple has sold 55 million iPads so far, about the same as the estimated number of Mac computers in use.

'Bird man' faces court for sitting in tree

A MAN in southwestern China who lived in a eucalyptus tree for more than three months to protest the planned demolition of his home is being tried for disturbing public order.

Chen Maoguo was dubbed the "bird man" for his tree-top sit-in last year in the Chongqing region, staged to protest what he considered inadequate compensation for the razing of his home, the Yunnan Information News said.

His home was one of many to be knocked down to make way for a shopping mall in Fengjie county.

However, his unusual protest beginning last August attracted crowds and media attention, leading to his arrest in November for disturbing public order, said the report, posted on the popular Chinese web portal Sina.com.

During his demonstration, Mr Chen pulled all of his food, water, clothing and other needs up by rope into the small makeshift shelter he constructed in a eucalyptus tree, it said.

The report said Mr Chen was to appear in a local court today. It did not say how old Mr Chen was, or what penalties he could face.

Land seizures, often involving corrupt officials and businesses eyeing real estate profits, have been a growing source of unrest in China.

The problem stirred an uproar last year as a property boom and resulting rash of mass evictions caused a number of violent clashes, protests and even suicides by stubborn homeowners.

Meet the trolls: 'I'm happy when they're angry'

Dark side of trolling

Three trolls, three different reasons for trolling: Ben, Sarah and James. Picture: Supplied Source: Supplied

BEN spends up to 70 hours a week on the internet getting high on other people's anger and despair.

The unemployed 19-year-old from Victoria - who spoke to news.com.au on the condition of anonymity - doesn't go out much and doesn't have many real friends, but he doesn't feel alone. He believes he's part of a community of similar-minded people who scour the web looking for pages to vandalise and lives to upset.

Ben (not his real name) first started trolling in 2008 on the online forum 4Chan.

His first act was innocuous enough: he weighed in on a discussion about religion and claimed to have disproved everything people had written.

Since then his trolling has become more vicious and destructive.

"It just makes me happy when I can make someone angry. It sounds weird but I kind of feed off their anger. The angrier I can get them, the better I feel," he told news.com.au.

He usually only trolls a post or website once before moving, not out of any sense of decency, but because he is scared of being arrested.

He said the worst thing he ever did was vandalise the Facebook memorial page of a young girl who had committed suicide. "I wrote, 'How's it hanging guys'."

He doesn't feel any remorse, and strangely doesn't consider his actions bullying despite claiming he probably wouldn't have started trolling if he had not been bullied at school.

IT'S HOT IN HELL

"I'd feel responsible but I wouldn't care. I've pretty much lost all hope for humanity anyway, I don't believe that anything can save people," he said.

Ben and the hundreds of thousands like him reflect the dark side of the internet. They believe themselves to be cultural critics, indulging in harmless fun, but RIP trolling is one of the most destructive and harmful forms of trolling. It mocks and exploits the pain of those grieving the loss of loved ones. It ranges from the sort of distasteful comment Ben posted to plastering pages with photoshopped pictures of babies in meat grinders or hardcore pornography.

Last year Bradley Paul Hampson became the first Australian to be jailed for it. He plastered the Facebook tribute pages of two slain schoolchildren with child pornography, an act the judge described as depraved.

In the UK, one of the most infamous RIP trolls, Sean Duffy, was sentenced several months later for persecuting on Facebook four families of dead children. On one girl's memorial page he wrote: "Help me mummy, It's hot in Hell."

But trollers like Ben and Hampson may not be just hurting their victims.

Cyber-researcher Karyn Krawford claims that extreme trolling may be a sign of mental ill-health.

Ms Krawford said she had done studies which showed the empathy of mental health sufferers decreased for every hour they spent online.

LACKING EMPATHY

"This lack of empathy caused people to become emotionally immune and desensitised to images they're not seeing in real life," she said.

In one study, subjects displayed a complete lack of empathy when shown images of people dying. "They couldn't see how much that person was hurting; they couldn't see the cut off arm or the pain and distress and terror.

"As a consequence they were able to make these remarks and express these bullying type behaviours."

Twenty-three-year-old stay-at-home mother Sarah, from South Australia, is one such bully. For years she limited her trolling to snarky posts on the parenting website BabyMama.org, reserving her vitriol for discussions about breastfeeding and vaccinations.

But last month her actions spiralled out of control and she started actively bullying other users. Sarah set up a Facebook page belittling another mother that had posted near naked pictures of herself on the website.

"She started getting negative replies and deleted the pictures but I saved the pictures and uploaded them to a Facebook group where she was humiliated," she said.

Sarah quickly apologised and deleted the photos after other users criticised her actions and the site threatened her with expulsion.

"I randomly targeted a lady for no reason, humiliated her for no reason - just to be a bitch. Looking back now it was petty. I'm one of those remorseful trolls, I suppose."

Sarah, like Ben, attributed her trolling to years of bullying she suffered at school. "I dropped out of school in year nine," she said. "I suppose I'm an asshole to people because I?m carrying all this spitefulness around with me. I hurt people."

Sydney student James admits he has problems switching from the "vicious but joking troll" persona on gaming sites to "James the nice guy" elsewhere.

"On gaming sites, if you don?t troll you?re pretty much seen as someone who is sucking up to the site moderators," he said.

And he has no shame when it comes to trolling. "If the person I was trolling was from a poorer area, maybe I'd say something like 'How does it feel having no future knowing you're from that area'," he said.

"It's just my mentality to make it personal and a lot of people take things way too seriously ? especially on social networking sites."

POWER OF THE WEAKLING

Psychologists have long attributed bad behaviour online to "deindividuation" - the feeling people get when they think they are anonymous.

"Social distance can cause a 55-year-old climate change sceptic with a job and a mortgage to behave like a spastic donkey with strange malicious behaviour," said researcher James Heathers, of the University of Sydney.

He said the quality of online conversations in general seemed to be worsening by the day, and had now turned into a competition to see who can yell "urrgggh lame" the loudest.

"There's no turn-taking, or reacting like there is in face-to-face communication," he said. "The conversational structure is completely broken and there?s no thoughtful consideration of issues."

Psychiatrist Dr Tanveer Ahmed said people who troll may well feel a sense of regret, guilt or shame afterwards but mostly they rationalise their behaviour.

?It's a bit like the day after a big party - a part of you could be filled with regret but most of you is like, 'I was off my face, I'm giving myself a pass'."

He said that people don't feel the need to moderate their behaviour when they were online.

"The ability to say 'hi how's it going' to people we dislike helps us function in society, but that facade isn?t required online and often the first thoughts that come to mind ? thoughts that would be unacceptable in other forums ? are the first ones we bang up into a comment section on the web."

He said a sense of power was important to how people behaved online. "You're far more likely to be a troll if you?re a relative weakling elsewhere," he said.

"The internet is kind of a Wizard of Oz type setting, where people can feel big, whereas in another social setting they can be, well, pissheads frankly."

MEET THE TROLLS

BEN

- "It just makes me happy when I can make someone angry. It sounds weird but I kind of feed off their anger. The angrier I can get them, the better I feel. I'd feel responsible but I wouldn't care. I've pretty much lost all hope for humanity anyway, I don't believe that anything can save people."

SARAH

- "I randomly targeted a lady for no reason, humiliated her for no reason - just to be a bitch. Looking back now it was petty.. I?m one of those remorseful trolls."

JAMES

Brace for big Telstra broadband prices

Apex technicians

Willunga resident Raaj Menon watches Apex technicians Andrew John (on ladder) and Brad Caskey install cables linking his house with the National Broadband Network. Picture: Herald Sun Source: The Advertiser

HOUSEHOLDS will be slugged at least $73 a month for Telstra's most basic National Broadband Network plans.

The nation's biggest telco will charge customers $49.95 a month for its slowest and most basic NBN service and at least $22.95 a month to keep their telephone line as part of the deal, even if they don't want it.

The total cost of $72.90 is three times the cheapest wholesale price spruiked by the Federal Government just 14 months ago.

And the NBN offering is even slower than existing $50-a-month plans that run on the pre-NBN technology.

The new offering which has an optimum speed of 25 mbps (megabits per second) is slower than current Telstra plans that offer 30 mbps.

Consumer groups yesterday accused Telstra of betraying customers by jacking up prices for its plans under the NBN, which Australians are already funding to the tune of $38 billion.

And with Australia positioned 18th in the world in terms of broadband affordability, experts say the Telstra price offering does nothing to make things easier for consumers, despite promises from the Government that it would deliver world-class speeds to every household.

"It is disappointing that Telstra has decided not to offer a cheap, entry-level product," leading telecommunications spokeswoman Elissa Freeman says.

Ms Freeman, director of policy for the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network, said the telco "was not being upfront with its customers", by trying to keep them on the old copper network that the Government is paying it $11 billion to shut down.

"There is no good reason why customers getting internet access via a Telstra NBN service should have to keep paying Telstra line rental to use the copper network rather than simply plugging their phone into the NBN box," she said.

Telstra spokeswoman Karina Keisler yesterday said these were only the first prices to be released and they would be reviewed based on customer feedback.

"This announcement is about offering good value plans to all of our customers and keeping it simple as we roll out to NBN trial sites," she said.

England's national selector Geoff Miller wants axed batsman Eoin Morgan to work on his technique

Sky Bet

Samit Patel's spin bowling earned him a place ahead of Eoin Morgan for England's tour of Sri Lanka, according to national selector Geoff Miller.

Morgan paid the price for a disappointing time in the United Arab Emirates, where he averaged 13.67 in three Tests against Pakistan and also failed to impress in the limited-overs matches.

His place for the two-Test series in Sri Lanka has gone to Patel, who can bat in the top six and bowls left-arm spin.

Patel has enjoyed some success in T20 and ODIs for England but is untried at Test level.

Decisions

"This is not an excuse culture we are in with this England team," Miller told Sky Sports News HD.

"We have to make decisions on certain players and certain areas.

"We wanted to cover the spin option as well as the batting option, so he (Morgan) missed out because we need to try somebody else.

"Ravi (Bopara) was there (in the UAE), he didn't play any games, and has the opportunity to fight for the batting spot with Samit Patel, who has shown a lot of promise."

Morgan averages 30.43 in 16 Tests over the last two years and has been told to improve his technique.

But the Dublin-born left-hander's next assignment will be a stint in the IPL Twenty20 league, which Miller admits is not ideal.

"He's an unflappable character and a talented player as well. He has to go away and work on his Test technique," Miller added.

"That will be quite difficult for him as he is going straight to the IPL. I'm sure he'll be wanting to re-establish his Test career and he is a strong enough character to do that."

Balance

England, the top ranked Test side in the world, went down to a 3-0 defeat to Pakistan, whose spinners Saeed Ajmal and Abdur Rehman ran riot.

But Miller was happy with the make-up of England's Test squad in the Middle East and explained the addition of an extra spinner, Kent's James Tredwell, for Sri Lanka.

"No I don't think we got it wrong. We ended up playing two (seamers) and two (spinners), which was a necessity, and it worked pretty well," Miller said.

"On this occasion we are virtually sure of the type of spinning conditions they are going to prepare for us.

"So we just needed to make sure we covered Graeme Swann in case of injury, consequently James comes into the squad. And we've covered Monty as well (with Patel).

"We are just making sure we are completely right for spinning conditions."

Cahill admits struggles

Gary Cahill: Has admitted things have been difficult for him so far at Chelsea

Sky Bet

Chelsea's January signing, Gary Cahill, has conceded it has been difficult for him during his early days at Stamford Bridge.

The England international left Bolton for manager Andre Villas-Boas' side and was expected to bolster the club's backline.

Cahill had been playing second fiddle to David Luiz and John Terry, but an injury to the latter has given him a chance.

The 26-year-old started Saturday's 3-0 win over former club Bolton and he hopes fans were more enthused by their performance.

Cahill accepts things have not gone to plan so far for him, although he believes with more time things will begin to gel.

Difficult

"I'm not going to lie and say it's been fantastically easy," he told Chelsea TV.

"We've had some sticky results of late and I have been plonked straight in the middle of it all. It has been difficult.

"Moving mid-season to a new club would be hard anyway, what with having to move house and everything that comes with it, but you just get on with it and put in some consistent performances.

"There is an expectation level from the fans and rightly so. They expect us to win games and come and watch football.

"There is nothing wrong with that and as players we have to try and produce that. They will be a lot happier with that performance against Bolton.

"My partnership with Luiz and the whole back four is new. But the more we work together on the training ground, the better the relationships will be."

Chris Bosh & Baby Mama Ripped by Judge in Custody Case -- Stop Fighting Like Children!

0227_chris_bosh_BN_01
Chris Bosh
and his baby mama Allison Mathis just got scolded in court by the judge in their ongoing custody battle -- who reprimanded the ex-couple for refusing to hash out their parenting problems ... without the government's help.

TMZ broke the story ... Bosh dragged Mathis to family court this morning in Orlando --just hours after the All-Star game -- insisting she's doing everything she can to ruin his relationship with his 3-year-old daughter ... putting up a fight every time he wants to see his kid.

But the judge was pissed he even had to hear the case -- chastising the former couple for involving lawyers in what should be a simple levelheaded discussion about sharing custody.

The judge said, "Life passes you by waiting for lawyers and cases to resolve. Meanwhile, the world continues."

The judge then reluctantly set a visitation schedule that will allow Bosh to see his daughter -- and both parties agreed to it. If either Bosh or Mathis violates the agreement, that person could be held in contempt.

Hulk: Porto say the forward has an 85million release clause in his contract

Sky Bet

Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas is considering a renewed raid on former club Porto for star forward Hulk, midfielder Joao Moutinho and wing-back Alvaro Pereira.

Blues boss Villas-Boas has revealed the Brazil forward, who helped him win an incredible Quadruple in Portugal last season, fits the profile of the kind of player he would like to recruit this summer.

Chelsea will almost certainly have space in their forward line next season, with both Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou currently looking set to leave when their contracts expire.

Florent Malouda has a further year to run on his deal, but has previously expressed a willingness to move on in search of more regular football.

Villas-Boas told Portuguese radio station TSF: "We have Kalou and Malouda, both of whom are nearing the end of their contracts, while Juan Mata and Daniel Sturridge are the future.

Buried the hatchet

"As such, there will surely be a place to fill and I see room for an explosive player on the wing, someone who is strong in one-on-one situations and Hulk fits that profile."

Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa has claimed Hulk has an 85million release clause - something even billionaire Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is likely to baulk at.

Negotiating with Porto proved futile last summer when the Blues tried to sign wing-back Pereira, with Pinto da Costa reportedly still smarting from Villas-Boas' decision to quit the Estadio do Dragao for Stamford Bridge.

If there had been a problem between them, they appear to have buried the hatchet, with Pinto da Costa having invited Villas-Boas to watch the Portuguese champions' Europa League defeat at Manchester City last week.

"I was very proud to be invited by Pinto da Costa to sit next to him," said Villas-Boas, who played down suggestions the move was an attempt to lure him back to Portugal.

Pride

"Returning to Porto will always be a huge source of pride, but right now I am completely motivated with my work at Chelsea."

An improved relationship between Villas-Boas and Pinto da Costa would certainly not hurt Chelsea in any future transfer negotiations.

The Blues have been linked with midfielder Moutinho as well as a renewed bid for Pereira.

Villas-Boas said: "They could surely play in the Premier League and at Chelsea."

Stewart Downing: Thinks Steven Gerrard should be England captain

Sky Bet

Stewart Downing has backed his club skipper Steven Gerrard to take on the England captaincy.

Gerrard is firm favourite to be handed the captain's armband for this week's friendly with Holland.

The Three Lions are without a permanent skipper following the Football Association's decision to strip John Terry of the armband.

With Fabio Capello leaving as part of the Terry aftermath, Stuart Pearce takes charge of the match and Downing feels he could do worse than hand the captaincy to Gerrard.

"He's captained Liverpool for many years and done very well and if picked for England would do that job well," the winger said at a press conference.

"He's a big player for Liverpool and England, has a great influence on England and drives teams on so if he is given the captaincy then great.

"He certainly has (a lot to offer). I've not spoken to Steven

about if he will retire after the tournament. I'll be selfish and hope he stays on."

GLITZY socialite Brynne Edelsten has said she wants to be pregnant to medical millionaire husband Geoffrey Edelsten by the end of the year.

Edelsten, 28, told New Idea the time was right to create a mini mogul of their own after being married for two years and two months.

"I feel like I'm ready and I really want to fall pregnant this year. Right, baby?" she said, nudging her 68-year old husband. "Whatever I say?"

The announcement, accompanied by a tropical-themed photo shoot from the couple's recent holiday to Hawaii, comes just days after Edelsten's former wife, Leanne, revealed Dr Edelsten had secretly fathered a child with another woman. The 22-year-old named Matthew, lives in Sydney.

Dr Edelsten said he would be happy to become a father again.

"I've delivered a lot of babies in my time - and treated them as they grow up - so I think I could do a good job," he said.

Brynne will have to clear some room in her schedule. Seven has bought the rights to a reality television show starring the busty blonde.
