Silva: Scored two and made another in Spain's 3-1 victory over Scotland

David Silva has expressed his delight at being given the opportunity to show what he can do when handed a starting role by Spain.

The Manchester City forward has slipped down the pecking order in recent times, with the reigning European and world champions favouring other creative options.

Spain are able to dip into an enviable pool of talent, but Silva recently admitted that he has been left feeling like a 'supporting actor' at times.

He was, however, handed his big chance in Tuesday's Euro 2012 qualifier with Scotland and stole the show as he scored two and made another for David Villa in a 3-1 win.

Silva was understandably beaming at the final whistle and hopes his showing will convince national coach Vicente del Bosque that he is deserving of a leading role in the future.

He told AS: "I'm happy because we've completed a very good qualification phase, winning every game. They were two difficult games (against Czech Republic and Scotland) and they've come out very well.

"Personally I'm very happy for the two goals I've scored and because things are going well for me both at club level as well as the national team. I hope to be able to continue along this line.

"I'm very happy about my game and I hope to carry on like this. I'm only focusing on playing. I'm calm and very happy."

Del Bosque was impressed by Silva's performance but, with the likes of Andres Iniesta, Xabi Alonso, and Cesc Fabregas set to be welcomed back into the fold, he admits he cannot offer guarantees to any player.

He said: "We have many alternatives, which on one hand is very good for all the seasons are very long and we hope that everyone arrives in the best condition for the European Championships."

Fernando Torres is another of those currently on the outside looking in, as he continues to struggle for consistency at Chelsea, and Del Bosque admits he is blessed with a wealth of attacking options.

"It's very easy to understand; it's difficult to play everyone," he said.

"Only 11 can start and you can only make three changes. Torres played the other day and in this match we opted for a shorter striker, such as Villa, against two very big centre-backs. It worked well."
