PINK has lashed out at anonymous Twitter trolls who slam celebrities.

The outspoken singer received death threats after making a joke about Chris Brown miming on US TV.

"The internet has created monsters," Pink said. "People that wouldn't have the balls to say anything in person but they get a keyboard under their fingers and, well, there's that saying 'Anonymity is a shield from the tyranny of the majority'. There are so many haters in the world, so many miserable people."

After Brown's performance on the Billboard Music Awards in May Pink tweeted: "One day if I lip-sych I hope I do it as well as him."

"It was a joke," Pink said. "It wasn't even meant like 'I hate Chris Brown'. Twitter brings out the best and worst people - myself included. I swear when I'm in my kitchen at 10pm at night I'm f---ing hilarious. When I read it the next day I'm like 'Hmm... maybe that didn't translate'. With the Chris Brown thing I got death threats for days. My favorite was 'I will snatch you within an inch of your life'. I don't know how that works exactly but whatever you want..."

Pink's comments come the day after Australian TV personality Charlotte Dawson was admitted to hospital following a barrage of abuse from Twitter trolls who told her to "go hang yourself".

Pink also copped Twitter abuse to her account when she used the social media platform to announce she was the new face of Covergirl cosmetics.

"After the announcement someone tweeted to me 'Too bad they can't photoshop the bitch off your face'," she says.

"I was like 'Ding ding ding! We have a winner, someone send that person a prize. They were probably all proud of themselves when they were writing it. But that's our society, that's where we're at right now."

Pink is not the first celebrity to deal with death threats on Twitter.

In February Kylie Minogue alerted police after a "deluded weirdo" threatened her life over social media. Australian Federal Police were involved in tracking down the perpetrator.

British singer and anti-bullying crusader Jessie J has also suffered a barrage of death threats on Twitter.

"It's an amazing way to speak with my fans and spread a good message, get music known, talk to people, educate people," Jessie J told News Limited last year.

"But it's also a forum for people to send you death threats and horrible messages. It's direct to your phone. You can't get away from it. I have thought about coming off Twitter. You can't filter out the things you don't want to read from your timeline. They stay in your head. I'm human. I'm not a robot.

"One guy literally sent me 'I want you to die' 150 times. That plays on your mind if you read it every day. It comes along with the territory, unfortunately. You have to remember I have an incredible life, with fans who won't stop until I do . . . Or two or three people message me saying they want me to die. I do take it seriously, I report every one.''

Jessie J originally retweeted vitriolic messages, which backfired when her followers started bullying the original tweeter on her behalf.

"You can't stoop to their level. You have to brush them off. They want you to get angry. I can't cater for the minority who want to bring you down, you cater for the masses who love you."

Australian songwriter Missy Higgins said musicians have to be selective in what Tweets they read that are addressed to them.

"There's absolute twats on Twitter," Higgins said. "One guy called me a stupid d--- c---. Lovely. The good thing is you can block people. Awful gross dudes send you things, they don't follow me, and they also say them to a lot of people.

"Twitter is more of a direct connection, people on blogs don't think they're saying things directly to you. So far most people have been really nice. "
