Amazon's Kindle Fire 'sold out'

Kindle Fire

AMAZON has quenched the Kindle Fire, saying its first tablet computer is now sold out.

The Internet retailer has a major press conference scheduled for next Thursday in Santa Monica, California. It's widely expected to reveal a new model of the Fire there.

Amazon.com launched the $US199 ($192) tablet last November. It was the first Kindle with a colour screen and the ability to run third-party applications, placing it in competition with Apple's iPad.

Amazon doesn't say how many Fires it has sold, but says it captured 22 per cent of US tablet sales over nine months.

That would make it the second-most popular tablet, after the iPad. Based on iPad sales reported by Apple, Fire sales can be estimated at somewhere around 5 million units.

'Bird man' faces court for sitting in tree

A MAN in southwestern China who lived in a eucalyptus tree for more than three months to protest the planned demolition of his home is being tried for disturbing public order.

Chen Maoguo was dubbed the "bird man" for his tree-top sit-in last year in the Chongqing region, staged to protest what he considered inadequate compensation for the razing of his home, the Yunnan Information News said.

His home was one of many to be knocked down to make way for a shopping mall in Fengjie county.

However, his unusual protest beginning last August attracted crowds and media attention, leading to his arrest in November for disturbing public order, said the report, posted on the popular Chinese web portal Sina.com.

During his demonstration, Mr Chen pulled all of his food, water, clothing and other needs up by rope into the small makeshift shelter he constructed in a eucalyptus tree, it said.

The report said Mr Chen was to appear in a local court today. It did not say how old Mr Chen was, or what penalties he could face.

Land seizures, often involving corrupt officials and businesses eyeing real estate profits, have been a growing source of unrest in China.

The problem stirred an uproar last year as a property boom and resulting rash of mass evictions caused a number of violent clashes, protests and even suicides by stubborn homeowners.

Pink takes aim at Twitter trolls

pink

Pink recently had to have her gall bladder removed. Source: National Features

PINK has lashed out at anonymous Twitter trolls who slam celebrities.

The outspoken singer received death threats after making a joke about Chris Brown miming on US TV.

"The internet has created monsters," Pink said. "People that wouldn't have the balls to say anything in person but they get a keyboard under their fingers and, well, there's that saying 'Anonymity is a shield from the tyranny of the majority'. There are so many haters in the world, so many miserable people."

After Brown's performance on the Billboard Music Awards in May Pink tweeted: "One day if I lip-sych I hope I do it as well as him."

"It was a joke," Pink said. "It wasn't even meant like 'I hate Chris Brown'. Twitter brings out the best and worst people - myself included. I swear when I'm in my kitchen at 10pm at night I'm f---ing hilarious. When I read it the next day I'm like 'Hmm... maybe that didn't translate'. With the Chris Brown thing I got death threats for days. My favorite was 'I will snatch you within an inch of your life'. I don't know how that works exactly but whatever you want..."

Pink's comments come the day after Australian TV personality Charlotte Dawson was admitted to hospital following a barrage of abuse from Twitter trolls who told her to "go hang yourself".

Pink also copped Twitter abuse to her account when she used the social media platform to announce she was the new face of Covergirl cosmetics.

"After the announcement someone tweeted to me 'Too bad they can't photoshop the bitch off your face'," she says.

"I was like 'Ding ding ding! We have a winner, someone send that person a prize. They were probably all proud of themselves when they were writing it. But that's our society, that's where we're at right now."

Pink is not the first celebrity to deal with death threats on Twitter.

In February Kylie Minogue alerted police after a "deluded weirdo" threatened her life over social media. Australian Federal Police were involved in tracking down the perpetrator.

British singer and anti-bullying crusader Jessie J has also suffered a barrage of death threats on Twitter.

"It's an amazing way to speak with my fans and spread a good message, get music known, talk to people, educate people," Jessie J told News Limited last year.

"But it's also a forum for people to send you death threats and horrible messages. It's direct to your phone. You can't get away from it. I have thought about coming off Twitter. You can't filter out the things you don't want to read from your timeline. They stay in your head. I'm human. I'm not a robot.

"One guy literally sent me 'I want you to die' 150 times. That plays on your mind if you read it every day. It comes along with the territory, unfortunately. You have to remember I have an incredible life, with fans who won't stop until I do . . . Or two or three people message me saying they want me to die. I do take it seriously, I report every one.''

Jessie J originally retweeted vitriolic messages, which backfired when her followers started bullying the original tweeter on her behalf.

"You can't stoop to their level. You have to brush them off. They want you to get angry. I can't cater for the minority who want to bring you down, you cater for the masses who love you."

Australian songwriter Missy Higgins said musicians have to be selective in what Tweets they read that are addressed to them.

"There's absolute twats on Twitter," Higgins said. "One guy called me a stupid d--- c---. Lovely. The good thing is you can block people. Awful gross dudes send you things, they don't follow me, and they also say them to a lot of people.

"Twitter is more of a direct connection, people on blogs don't think they're saying things directly to you. So far most people have been really nice. "

Bickmore: 'Sorry Qantas and my nan'

WARNING: Accidental coarse language. THE PROJECT'S Carrie Bickmore was left red-faced after an embarrassing mispronunciation of the word 'Qantas' on live television.

Carrie Bickmore

Carrie Bickmore. Picture: Channel Ten Source: Supplied

CARRIE Bickmore has laughed off her accidental use of the C-bomb on TV last night.

The Project co-host blurted out the expletive when trying to pronounce "Qantas" and unintentionally called the airline "C...as".

But Bickmore said today she wasn't dwelling on her on-air slip-up.

"Oh look, I couldn't have done anything about it. I had that split-second in my head - 'did anyone hear that?' And I was like, 'I think I said that'," Bickmore told mX.

"I thought I'd better acknowledge it and say sorry, and then in my head I was thinking, 'I think I've just made it worse'. And then I got the giggles and couldn't stop.

"I thought, 'well, I certainly won't be getting an upgrade any time soon'."

The glamorous newsreader joked that she hoped she still had a job. "I haven't gone into work yet - I'm assuming I still have a job. I haven't heard otherwise."

Earlier today, Carrie tweeted this apology: "Any publicity is good publicity right??!! Sorry @qantasairways and my nan", to which Qantas replied: "@BickmoreCarrie We forgive you Carrie. We're sure it wasn't intentional :)"

The footage - which has been uploaded to YouTube - has been viewed more than 15,000 times in less than 24 hours.

Bickmore's The Project co-host, Dave Hughes, said the show had embraced the controversy. "We heard her say C...as and it was a moment where you think, 'all right, what do we do with that?'

"We were laughing about it - we were getting so much internet reaction...we just thought we'd celebrate the silliness of it.

"You just can't beat someone saying C...as, apparently."

A Ten spokesman said the network had received no complaints as of early today.

According to police, Guastaferro -- who appeared on "Swap" back in '08 -- was in a car with a 54-year-old lawyer who was arrested for DWI near Buffalo, NY on August 27.

The lawyer was also busted for providing alcohol to a person under 21 (Alicia) and patronizing a prostitute (also Alicia).

The lawyer has since denied any wrongdoing.

According to reports, Alicia told police she's known the lawyer for 2 years ... and he usually pays her between $500 and $700 for sex.

FYI -- Guastaferro sued the people behind "Wife Swap" in 2010 ... claiming the show made her look like a "spoiled brat." The case is still ongoing.

NATO personnel gunned down

A MAN in an Afghan police uniform has gunned down three NATO personnel in the war-torn country's troubled south, the latest so-called "green on blue" attack.

The deaths take the toll this year in "green-on-blue" killings -- in which Afghan forces turn their weapons against their Western allies -- to at least 26, in a total of 18 such incidents.

In keeping with its usual policy, NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) gave few details of Sunday's incident and did not reveal the nationality of the victims.

"An individual wearing an Afghan National Civil Order Police uniform turned his weapon against International Security Assistance Force service members in southern Afghanistan today, killing three service members," ISAF said in a statement.

An ISAF spokesman said the gunman was wounded and detained after the attack, which happened around 5pm (2230 AEST), and is now under investigation. The incident is not thought to have happened on an ISAF base, the spokesman said.

The spokesman added that ISAF was still investigating whether the attacker was a police officer or not.

The Afghan Civil Order Police was set up in 2006 as an elite riot control force.

The attack comes nearly two weeks after three men in Afghan police uniforms killed a soldier with the US-led force, also in the south.

An increasing number of Afghan troops have turned their weapons against NATO soldiers who are helping Kabul fight a decade-long insurgency by hardline Taliban Islamists.

Some of the assaults are claimed by the Taliban, who say they have infiltrated the ranks of Afghan security forces, but many are attributed to cultural differences and antagonism between the allied forces.

ISAF has taken several security measures in response to the shootings, including assigning "guardian angels" -- soldiers who watch over their comrades as they sleep.

NATO has around 130,000 soldiers fighting alongside some 350,000 Afghan security personnel against the Taliban-led insurgency, but they are due to pull out of the country in 2014.

The Western coalition is to hand over security to local forces by mid-2013 and will play a support role up to the final withdrawal by the end of the following year.

'Red Shirt' to run for Thai government

A THAI protest leader accused of terrorism was released from prison briefly to apply to run in a by-election seen as a key test of the opposition's prospects of success in nationwide polls.

Kokaew Pikulthong, a senior "Red Shirt" involved in the mass rally in Bangkok that ended last month, will stand against incumbent Panich Vikitsreth of the ruling Democrat Party in the July 25 vote in the capital.

A Thai court last week granted permission for Kokaew, the candidate of the main opposition Puea Thai Party, to be released temporarily from Bangkok Remand Prison to register to challenge Panich, a vice foreign minister.

Mr Kokaew, who has not been convicted of any crimes relating to his role in the two-month-long street protest, was later returned to detention, but is expected to seek permission to be released again to campaign for votes.

The Red Shirts' rally, which at its peak attracted up to about 100,000 people demanding immediate elections, sparked outbreaks of violence that left 90 people dead, mostly civilians, and nearly 1900 injured.

Enraged protesters set fire to dozens of major buildings after the army crushed the demonstration by the mostly poor and working class Reds with an assault on their vast fortified encampment in central Bangkok on May 19.

The Red Shirts were campaigning for elections they hoped would oust the government, which they view as undemocratic because it came to power with the backing of the army after a court ruling threw out the previous administration.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva proposed November polls in a bid to end the crippling protests, but shelved the plan because the Reds -- many of whom seek the return of fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra -- refused to disperse.

Mr Abhisit, whose government was elected by parliamentary vote in 2008 and enjoys support among the Bangkok-based elite, must call nationwide elections by the end of next year at the latest.

Many of the Red Shirt leaders are in jail facing terrorism charges for their roles in the unrest. The government has rejected the opposition's call for a state of emergency to be lifted in the capital for the by-election.

ALLONSIE: It took Doctor Who to stop piracy

Check out the new trailer for Dr. Who prequel mini-series 'Pond Life'.

Doctor Who

No Amy, the idea is to beat the pirates... not be a pirate. Picture: BBC Source: Supplied

THE ABC is sending Doctor Who back in time so that the sci-fi legend materialises online a week before new episodes air on TV.

In an Australian first, the new adventures of Amy, Rory and The Doctor will be available on the ABC's iView player from 5.10am AEST on Sunday September 2, just hours after the first episode airs in the UK.

The show will then reappear in the future, on ABC1at 7:30pm the following Saturday, September 8.

This is the first time a big blockbuster TV show will air in full on an Australian online player within hours of its official release elsewhere.

In 2010, the ABC screened the first episode of Doctor Who on iView before it aired on TV, but the episodes came two weeks after the BBC screened them in the UK.

ABC1 controller Brendan Dahill said the decision to air the show online before television was motivated by a desire to reduce piracy, as well as fulfill the needs of drooling Whovians, who have waited almost a year for the new series.

" Piracy is wrong, as you are denying someone their rights and income for their intellectual property," Mr Dahill said. "The fact that it is happening is indicative that as broadcasters we are not meeting demand for a segment of the population.

"So as broadcasters we need to find convenient ways of making programs available via legal means to discourage the need for piracy."

Mr Dahill said that the ABC's iView "is the most watched catch-up TV service in Australia". Almost one in two online Australians aged 16-plus having used iView.

"The new iView app for iPhones and iPod Touch, launched on June 26, has seen a phenomenal 434,000 downloads recorded to date, with 210,000 downloads recorded in its first week,"Mr Dahill said.

But he also acknowledged that the ABC did not have to compete for ratings like other channels, allowing it to make broadcasting decisions that provide convenience and choice for its audience.

The decision to air Doctor Who online came just a week after News Ltd CEO Kim Williams made an impassioned speech at the Australian International Movie Convention, where he called piracy "scumbag theft" by "copyright kleptomaniacs of the digital age".

Indonesia visit will happen, says Obama

UNITED States President Barack Obama says his twice delayed trip to Indonesia is going to happen.

His trip to the most populous Muslim nation is tied with a trip to Australia but he made no specific mention of Australia.

Domestic emergencies including the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill have kept Mr Obama from visiting previously.

Mr Obama held a bilateral meeting with Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on the sidelines of Toronto's G20 meeting.

"Because of the crisis that we've had in the Gulf, I've had to delay the trip," Mr Obama told reporters at G20.

"But graciously, for a second time now, the president has re-extended the invitation, and I am confident that we are going to get there."

FBI helping hunt for woman missing in Nepal

THE FBI says it's helping the US State Department in the investigation of a Colorado woman who disappeared while trekking alone in Nepal.

Denver FBI spokesman Dave Joly said today the agency was also working with Nepalese authorities on the disappearance of 23-year-old Aubrey Sacco of Greeley.

Ms Saccohas notbeen heard from since April 20, when she e-mailed her parents from Nepal. She planned to finish her trip around April 30.

Her father, Paul Sacco, told the Greeley Tribune that FBI agents had made two or three visits to his home.

Paul Sacco went to Nepal in May to look for his daughter.

He said he recovered her laptop computer and journal from a hotel.

Aubrey Sacco graduated from the University of Colorado last year.
