WHEN asked what kind of Bond film Steven Spielberg would have made had Cubby Broccoli hired him during the late Seventies, one film critic answered that result would have looked a lot like Moonraker.
That's because Bond is a producer's movie.
Different directors may add little flourishes here and there but the product stays the same: Bond saves the world from a terrible threat, beds a beautiful woman, or two, drives a flash car, performs a spectacular stunt and flashes a gadget or two.

The same can be said for Mission: Impossible. Tom Cruise is the man calling the shots and like Broccoli he knows what kind of adventure he wants his Bond alter-ego, Ethan Hunt, should have. The franchise has gone through four directors now (five if you count Joe Carnahan's aborted attempt in the mid-Noughties), but the adventures remain the same.
The latest instalment has Pixar veteran Brad Bird at the helm. It's his first live action feature and although it boasts some spectacular set pieces - the Kremlin break-in and the climb up the Burj Khalifa in Dubai - Ghost Protocol offers the viewer nothing new.

Cruise is still flashing his trademark his grin, the computer geek is still cracking jokes (Simon Pegg takes over from Ving Rhames) and Lalo Schifrin's dum dum dum-dum still threatens to steal the show.
The appearance of Jeremy Renner on the cast list led to much speculation during shooting that Cruise was handing over the franchise to a younger man.
But Ghost Protocol is very much the Tom Cruise show, and is a reminder of why he gets the big pay cheques.
