'Bird man' faces court for sitting in tree

A MAN in southwestern China who lived in a eucalyptus tree for more than three months to protest the planned demolition of his home is being tried for disturbing public order.

Chen Maoguo was dubbed the "bird man" for his tree-top sit-in last year in the Chongqing region, staged to protest what he considered inadequate compensation for the razing of his home, the Yunnan Information News said.

His home was one of many to be knocked down to make way for a shopping mall in Fengjie county.

However, his unusual protest beginning last August attracted crowds and media attention, leading to his arrest in November for disturbing public order, said the report, posted on the popular Chinese web portal Sina.com.

During his demonstration, Mr Chen pulled all of his food, water, clothing and other needs up by rope into the small makeshift shelter he constructed in a eucalyptus tree, it said.

The report said Mr Chen was to appear in a local court today. It did not say how old Mr Chen was, or what penalties he could face.

Land seizures, often involving corrupt officials and businesses eyeing real estate profits, have been a growing source of unrest in China.

The problem stirred an uproar last year as a property boom and resulting rash of mass evictions caused a number of violent clashes, protests and even suicides by stubborn homeowners.

'I'd rather suck pus out of an abscess'

When asked about his signature Bond move actor Daniel Craig says he's rather 'suck pus' than perform on cue.

"I'D RATHER suck pus out of an abscess."

It probably wasn't the response I was hoping for when I asked Daniel Craig to show me some of the "individual" moves he'd just described using in his latest Bond flick, but it was all I was going to get anyway.

After all, it's not every day you get to encounter ?Bond. James, Bond?, so why not take your chances asking for a little elaboration?

In town to promote Skyfall, the latest installment of the Bond series, the talk of the media green room was how short, sharp and dry Craig had been with reporters during their allocated six-minute encounter.

But it wasn't just mentioning his "moves" that made Craig a little acerbic in his seat.

The 44-year-old decided he'd also rather not discuss his status as "the hottest Bond ever," nor would he be drawn on his attachment to the digits 007 outside his on-screen role.

"No, that would be weird," he said.

However, both his co-stars, Berenice Marlohe and Naomie Harris more than made up for Craig's sharpness.

The epitome of class, the two "Bond girls" couldn't have been more entertaining or accommodating.

Let's just hope Craig enjoys his red carpet appearance at the State Theatre tonight a little more than he enjoyed the interview process.

Check back next week for a full Bond video with Daniel Craig and Bond girls Naomie Harris and Berenice Marlohe.

Randy Couture -- My Manager Cheated Death in Freak BMW Explosion

EXCLUSIVE

111512_bmw_fire_launch_v3
UFC legend Randy Couture is thanking his lucky stars -- because his manager narrowly dodged a gruesome death this month in L.A. ... when his BMW spontaneously burst into flames .... and TMZ has video of the fiery inferno.

Randy's manager Sam Spira tells TMZ, he was driving to a friend's house several days ago when "without any warning, my BMW X6M burst into flames, exploded and was completely totaled."

Sam says, "I can best describe the event as a very loud bang while going about 10 miles an hour -- there was a speed bump that I slowed down for -- followed by an immediate giant engine malfunction light and flames coming out from the front and under the car."

And if that wasn't scary enough, Sam says his young daughter was in the passenger seat -- and the passenger door wouldn't open. So Sam had to grab his daughter and pull her out the driver's side, burning himself in the process.

Seconds later, Sam says the car exploded and was immediately engulfed in flames.Spira adds, "Had we been traveling on the freeway, we would probably all be dead."

Firefighters arrived to the scene moments later to extinguish the blaze.

1115_the_aftermath_car
To make matters worse, Spira says his BMW dealership has not yet inspected the car to determine why the engine exploded -- and the BMW corporation is ignoring his phone calls. Spira tells us, he plans to sue if the company doesn't do something soon.

Randy Couture tells TMZ, ?I was really shocked to see the pictures and video of my manager?s bad-ass BMW X6M on fire and exploding ? a BMW that I drove in many many times. I am just glad that he and his children got out alive.?

We repeatedly reached out to BMW for comment. No word back.

'Wife-killers are treated better'

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez

BEN Affleck says media who painted him as a dim-witted "camera whore" treated him worse than a wife-killer.

After the critical and commercial success of his new film Argo, Ben Affleck had a long complain to GQ magazine about his previous treatment from the media.

He said Good Will Hunting left people assuming he was like his character - the dim-witted friend who hitched his wagon to a real star in Matt Damon.

But the media really turned on him when he started dating Jennifer Lopez - with comments such as "it is fashionable at the moment to loathe Ben Affleck. To be honest, the guy makes it easy."

"At the time I knew on some level this is insane," Affleck told GQ. "What was that guy's name who killed his wife and dumped her off the side of a boat? Peterson. I remember thinking he actually gets slightly better treatment than I do in the press. At least they had to say 'alleged killer'.

"Unfortunately there's an aspect of that, that's like one of those fights you see on YouTube where one of them falls down and then a bunch of people who were standing around come over and kick the person.

"They don't know them, they have no involvement in the fight, but they recognise a moment what they can get a free shot in, and for some people it's just too much to resist.

"And that was definitely me at that point. I was the guy. I was the designated person to loathe."

He thinks people wrongly picked him as the "frat guy" who beat them up at school.

And he says they were wrong that his relationship with J Lo was a conscious publicity-grab.

"I could tell it was damaging me and I tried to get away from it, but there was still this idea: this is what this guy wants, he's a shallow guy, a camera whore or whatever. And there was no convincing people that this wasn't the case."

But he does admit he made some mistakes that contributed to his image problem, such as going to a Rolls-Royce dealership and being given a car to drive around, free of charge.

Ben Affleck is on the cover of this month's GQ magazine in the US.

Facebook hands off on bullying - Abbott

Facebook

Source: AFP

OPPOSITION Leader Tony Abbott today slammed Facebook for its "hands-off" approach to online bullying during an announcement of the Coalition's online safety proposals at a Sydney school.

"We hear too many concerning instances where complaints are not responded to and we believe the scheme will give the community the certainty it would expect,'' Mr Abbott said. "We are going to insist that the hands-off approach which has largely been adopted until now cannot continue," Mr Abbott said.

"We believe major social media outlets will be held to account."

The Coalition is seeking input from parents, schools and young people as well as industry experts on how to protect the online safety of Australian children.

In a discussion paper released today, the Coalition said the overwhelming finding was that parents and schools did not know where to turn when their children were bullied online.

Mr Abbott said Facebook and other social media outlets would be required to provide an officer as a single point of contact for parents to more easily have offensive content removed from their sites, according to the proposal.

The Coalition proposed "a cooperative, regulatory scheme, underpinned by legislation" that would be developed in consultation with school and parent communities, ACMA and social media companies.

Mr Abbott said there would be a range of punishments for cyber bullies that would vary according to the gravity of the offence.

"I suppose you would deal with them the same way you would with bullies generally," he said.

"Sometimes a stern talking to is enough, sometimes if bullying slips into harassment it can become a criminal offence.

"The important thing is that the purpose of today's discussion is that bullying must stop."

Mr Abbott stressed that the online safety proposal was not about internet censorship.

"The thing about the online world is that it's anonymous, it's permanent and it's everywhere," Mr Abbott said.

"And that's why protection is very, very significant.

?About 90 per cent of Australian high school students have a Facebook account.?

Opposition communications spokesman, Malcolm Turnbull said that if bullying and harassment of children was unacceptable in the playground, ?then it must also be unacceptable online?.

The Coalition's discussion paper on Enhancing Online Safety for Children said it would be seeking industry, community input into whether there may be scope to improve the level of coordination with law enforcement to ensure children's online safety.

They also proposed establishing an independent "Children's e-Safety Commissioner" that would be charged with coordinating a national response to online safety as well as create guidelines that schools, parents, children and internet providers should follow.

Web fan backlash kills Doctor Who spoiler

Doctor Who Matt Smith

IT could have been the ultimate spoiler for fans of the hugely popular international hit series Doctor Who.

A copy of a script for one of the most-highly anticipated episodes of the new series was reportedly left in a cab by an actress and the title page posted online.

But after a backlash from fans who saw the page on social news site Reddit a decision was made to return it to the BBC production offices in Cardiff, Wales.

The most popular comment on the leak thread reads: ?Listen, that needs to go right back to the BBC Wales offices. A lot of people are excited about (writer) Neil Gaiman?s return to DW and (producer) Steven Moffat put a LOT into casting it. Please do the right thing and tell your friend not to spoil it or let it fall into the wrong hands.?

The episode in question was written by acclaimed fantasy and sci-fi author Gaiman and called "The Last Cyberman".

Gaiman was one of the first writers to embrace social media and has a huge following online. The Cybermen are one of the key villains in the series and mortal enemies of the Doctor.

Within days the Reddit user known as ?Shrimpdude? behind the thread posted: ?The leaked script has been returned. I went today to Cardiff Bay with the girl who recovered it and we handed it over. Thanks to everyone who upvoted the post and everyone who helped contact the BBC. Here is my visitor?s pass as evidence.?
