Tropical storm Alex returns to kill 10

THE first major storm of the Atlantic season was entering the Gulf of Mexico today after unleashing landslides and floods that killed at least 10 people in Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador.

Overnight, Alex, which had been downgraded earlier to a tropical depression, strengthened and regained its tropical storm status.

At noon (AEST), Alex, which packed sustained winds of 75km/h, was entering the Gulf of Mexico some 100km west southwest of Campeche, Mexico, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.

"Additional strengthening is forecast - and Alex could become a hurricane within the next 48 hours," the NHC said.

Although it was not due to directly hit the massive BP oil spill off the southern US state of Louisiana, the storm could still generate waves that would hamper clean-up and containment efforts.

Officials in Nicaragua told AFP the bodies of six people had been found in or around the northern city of Esteli, swept to their deaths by torrents from the swollen San Lucas river.

In eastern El Salvador, on Central America's Pacific coast, two people drowned when they were carried away by strong currents near San Miguel, while more than 500 people were evacuated to shelters from high-risk areas.

In western Guatemala, two farmers working on a road improvement project were buried and killed by a rain-triggered landslide, the national emergency agency Conred reported.

Forecasters said the storm was expected to dump a total of 10-20cm of rain over the Yucatan Peninsula, southern Mexico and Guatemala bythis afternoon.

Up to 38cm of rain were possible in mountainous areas and forecasters warned of "life-threatening flash floods and mudslides".

Central America was slammed last month by Tropical Storm Agatha, which roared ashore into Guatemala from the Pacific, unleashing heavy rains and floods that left some 275 people dead or missing.

The NHC's long-term forecast has the storm heading over the Gulf of Mexico in the direction of the US-Mexico border, but with a possibility of waves and winds generated by the storm affecting the site of the huge oil slick unleashed by the April 20 explosion of the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon rig.

But a forecaster at the NHC downplayed a direct hit on the oil cleanup area.

"The storm is not an issue for the spill," said NHC spokesman Dennis Feltgen.

Donna Summer Lithographs -- Art Gallery JACKS UP Prices After Singer's Death

Exclusive

0525_donna_summer_getty
Death = $$$ ... at least when it comes to art ... and a gallery in Vegas is proving the point, 'cause it immediately upped the price of Donna Summer pieces when she passed away.

The Jack Gallery in Las Vegas worked with Summer in 2003 to create limited edition lithographs ... printing 750 hand-signed prints of 4 different art pieces (designed by Summer), which sold for $550 each BEFORE she lost her battle with cancer.

But days after the Disco Queen passed away earlier this month, the prices went up AT LEAST $100 a pop ... with the cheap ones going for $650. Donna's most popular piece -- The Winter Melody -- was raised from $550 to $1,000.

The gallery tells us that Summer's work is in high demand since her death -- Winter Melody is almost sold out -- and her art is effecting people like never before. We're told when one couple came in to admire the legendary singer's art, they broke down and cried.

The gallery is currently planning a memorial exhibition for all the pieces that will go up in September at one of their Las Vegas locations.

When asked about the price increase, a rep for the store says it's just the nature of the business ... "Prices are determined by availability."

Timothy Busfield -- Sexual Assault Case Going to Prosecutors

Exclusive

0525_timothy_busfield_article
Timothy Busfield -- the star of 'The West Wing," "thirtysomething" and "Revenge of the Nerds" -- is by no means in the clear over allegations he sexually assaulted a date, because we've learned her complaint is now going to the L.A. City Attorney for possible prosecution.

TMZ broke the story ... a woman accused Busfield of groping her during a date at a San Fernando Valley movie theater. She went to cops, who have been investigating the case.

We're told detectives want to interview Busfield, after which they will send the file over to the L.A. City Attorney. Of course, Busfield doesn't have to speak to cops, but either way the case is going to prosecutors.

The good news for Busfield -- the case won't be referred to the LA. County D.A., who could file felony charges where prison would be on the line. The City Attorney can only file misdemeanor sexual assault charges, and the maximum penalty is 6 months in jail.

Reportedly still in love and looking at reconciliation ... Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher during happier times back in 2006. Picture: AFP Source: AP

SHE announced that she was going to divorce her adulterous husband back in November, yet has never followed through with proceedings.

It may well be that actress and TV producer Demi Moore never does.

For the 49-year-old is reportedly heading for a reconciliation with her estranged husband, actor Ashton Kutcher.

British newspaper the Sunday Mirror reported that Demi and Ashton are still very much in love and recently had an emotional reunion at a friend's birthday party.

Demi, Ashton 'gearing up for $290 million divorce

The soiree was thrown for Kabbalah Rabbi Yehuda Berg, who officiated the Hollywood couple's wedding back in 2005.

Upon seeing each other at the event, the pair reportedly embraced for a lengthy 60 seconds.

"They are still desperately in love and could be on for a reconciliation,' a source told the publication. "The divorce isn?t being processed right now."

During the dinner, Ashton also made an emotional speech for Yehuda and his eyes welled up with tears when he admitted that he had made "mistakes".

"I've made all these horrendous mistakes in the last year," he reportedly said in the speech.

Sources at the event said Ashton broke down in tears as he sat down in his chair following the speech.

"Ashton's voice started to break as he spoke. He just fell into tears. He sat down to a round of applause while Demi just looked frozen."

Demi reportedly arrived at the event after Kutcher. After wishing the Rabbi a Happy Birthday, she chatted to her estranged husband.

"She went over to wish Yehuda a happy birthday and Ashton was right by him. Yehuda left them to talk. They started to chat and were extremely affectionate. She was staring at him like a lovesick puppy," the source told the publication.

Demi has also been hinting via her Twitter account that she might be ready to forgive.

Two tweets referred to making mistakes and not giving up on the people you love.

They included one from rapper Wiz Khalifa which read: "We all make mistakes. Don't let that be the reason you give up on somebody."

And another from The Love Stories: "Sometimes you have to love people from a distance and give them a space and time to get their minds right".

The star announced her intention to divorce Ashton last November - although proceedings are yet to be executed by either party. It followed claims he had cheated on her with partygirl Sara Leal during a seedy night in San Diego.

'Red Shirt' to run for Thai government

A THAI protest leader accused of terrorism was released from prison briefly to apply to run in a by-election seen as a key test of the opposition's prospects of success in nationwide polls.

Kokaew Pikulthong, a senior "Red Shirt" involved in the mass rally in Bangkok that ended last month, will stand against incumbent Panich Vikitsreth of the ruling Democrat Party in the July 25 vote in the capital.

A Thai court last week granted permission for Kokaew, the candidate of the main opposition Puea Thai Party, to be released temporarily from Bangkok Remand Prison to register to challenge Panich, a vice foreign minister.

Mr Kokaew, who has not been convicted of any crimes relating to his role in the two-month-long street protest, was later returned to detention, but is expected to seek permission to be released again to campaign for votes.

The Red Shirts' rally, which at its peak attracted up to about 100,000 people demanding immediate elections, sparked outbreaks of violence that left 90 people dead, mostly civilians, and nearly 1900 injured.

Enraged protesters set fire to dozens of major buildings after the army crushed the demonstration by the mostly poor and working class Reds with an assault on their vast fortified encampment in central Bangkok on May 19.

The Red Shirts were campaigning for elections they hoped would oust the government, which they view as undemocratic because it came to power with the backing of the army after a court ruling threw out the previous administration.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva proposed November polls in a bid to end the crippling protests, but shelved the plan because the Reds -- many of whom seek the return of fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra -- refused to disperse.

Mr Abhisit, whose government was elected by parliamentary vote in 2008 and enjoys support among the Bangkok-based elite, must call nationwide elections by the end of next year at the latest.

Many of the Red Shirt leaders are in jail facing terrorism charges for their roles in the unrest. The government has rejected the opposition's call for a state of emergency to be lifted in the capital for the by-election.
