Rachel's tragedy inspires 10,000 to give

Rachel Beckwith

AN American girl who aimed to raise $US300 to bring clean water to an African village, but then died in a car crash before achieving her goal, has inspired 10,000 people to donate more than $US400,000 to the cause.

Rachel Beckwith, 9, set up the appeal in honour of her ninth birthday, asking her friends and family to donate to the Charity: Water campaign instead of buying her birthday presents.

"I found out that millions of people don't live to see their 5th birthday. And why? Because they didn't have access to clean, safe water so I'm celebrating my birthday like never before," she wrote on a website set up by Rachel and her mother before her June 12 birthday.

By her birthday, $US220 was raised and the page was closed.

On July 20, Rachel was fatally injured in a 13-car pileup in Bellevue, Washington state.

At the weekend, she was taken off life support and a pastor from her church arranged for the donation page to be reopened.

By Wednesday afternoon, some 10,000 people had donated more than $US400,000 in Rachel's honour, many in gifts of $US9 each.

Earlier in the week, Rachel's mother, Samantha Paul, who was also injured in the accident, thanked donors online for their generosity.

"I am in awe of the overwhelming love to take my daughter's dream and make it a reality. In the face of unexplainable pain you have provided undeniable hope," Paul wrote.

"I know Rachel is smiling!"

Her little sister, Sienna, was also in the car but not seriously injured.

The total raised by Rachel's appeal for Charity: Water has been growing exponentially since the weekend, increasing by nearly $US100,000 on Wednesday.

"We've all been so deeply moved by Rachel's unselfishness," said nonprofit founder Scott Harrison, who used his own 34th and 35th birthdays to raise money to bring clean drinking water to Africa.

Charity: Water estimates each $US20 donation is enough to provide one person with clean drinking water for 20 years.
In the past five years, the New York-based charity has raised $US48 million ($A43.7 million) and supported 3962 water projects in Africa, Asia and Central America.

The money is spent mostly to dig wells, improve water systems or catch rainwater and the projects usually serve entire communities.

Rachel's fundraising campaign has quickly become the largest in the history of Charity: Water, which depends mostly on individuals to invite their friends and families to give money to celebrate a birthday or wedding or other event, said spokeswoman Sarah Cohen.

Rachel was inspired to support the charity when Harrison spoke at her church.

Actor Joe Pesci claims he was promised to play the role of a childhood friend and enforcer of crime boss John Gotti Sr in Fiore Films' Gotti. Picture: AP Source: AP

"GOODFELLAS" star Joe Pesci is suing a film studio after he allegedly gained 15 kilograms for a $3 million role in the upcoming Gotti family biopic only to be dropped from the part, TMZ reported today.

Pesci said that Fiore Films encouraged him to state publicly how happy he was to be starring in "Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father" - but then was told he was being pulled from the critical role of Angelo Ruggiero, Gotti's close friend and enforcer.

He was offered a lesser role, playing Anthony "Gaspipe" Casso, for the reduced fee of $1 million, according to a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles.

He is suing for $3 million minimum, as well as punitive damages.

Pesci's lawyer claims the 68-year-old actor relied on the contract by assuming the character of Ruggiero in every respect.

"[Pesci] has since ended his very strict and healthy diet and has so far gained approximately 30 pounds (13.5 kg) in anticipation of playing Ruggiero, who was well known for his heavy and stocky build," the suit said.

However, Marc Fiore, the movie's executive producer, described the lawsuit as "a total joke."

"Nick Cassavetes [the movie's original director] brought Joe Pesci in," Fiore told Radar Online. "When Cassavetes left to do the movie 'Yellow,' Pesci stopped returning my phone calls."

He added, "Barry Levinson was brought on board to be the director. We offered the role of 'Gaspipe' Casso to Joe, and he turned it down. The fact is, Pesci wouldn't return Barry's calls, my calls or our attorney's phone calls."

Fiore continued, "Joe Pesci never had a signed contact for any role in the Gotti movie, period. That is a fact. Why would Joe keep gaining weight after Cassavetes left? That is baffling to me, since that is when he stopped talking to us. I have no idea why he would file this lawsuit."

Fiore said he has not ruled out filing a countersuit against the Oscar-winning actor.

The movie, due to begin shooting next year, will profile the family of notorious mob boss John Gotti, also known as the "Teflon Don." High-profile Hollywood stars - including John Travolta, Al Pacino and Lindsay Lohan - are confirmed to star in the film.

'Mubarak healthy enough to face trial'

Hosni Mubarak

FORMER Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak is fit enough to face trial in Cairo next week, and he will be moved from his hospital in Sharm el Sheikh, a justice official said today.

"It has been decided that the trial of ex-president Hosni Mubarak and his two sons Alaa and Gamal ... will be held in the building of the General Authority for Investment and the free trade areas in the Cairo Expo grounds," the official MENA news agency quoted a justice ministry official as saying.

Egyptian media reported overnight that justice authorities were studying the feasibility of using the Cairo exhibition center to hold the trial so that families of his alleged victims could be present.

The 83-year-old former ruler was hospitalized in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh after suffering from heart problems. Due to speculation over his health, the trial was expected either to be held in Sharm el Sheikh or to be postponed from its planned Aug. 3 start.

Mubarak will be tried for corruption and ordering the killing of protesters in the uprising against his rule earlier this year. More than 800 people were killed in the 18-day revolt against Mubarak's rule.

'Bird man' faces court for sitting in tree

A MAN in southwestern China who lived in a eucalyptus tree for more than three months to protest the planned demolition of his home is being tried for disturbing public order.

Chen Maoguo was dubbed the "bird man" for his tree-top sit-in last year in the Chongqing region, staged to protest what he considered inadequate compensation for the razing of his home, the Yunnan Information News said.

His home was one of many to be knocked down to make way for a shopping mall in Fengjie county.

However, his unusual protest beginning last August attracted crowds and media attention, leading to his arrest in November for disturbing public order, said the report, posted on the popular Chinese web portal Sina.com.

During his demonstration, Mr Chen pulled all of his food, water, clothing and other needs up by rope into the small makeshift shelter he constructed in a eucalyptus tree, it said.

The report said Mr Chen was to appear in a local court today. It did not say how old Mr Chen was, or what penalties he could face.

Land seizures, often involving corrupt officials and businesses eyeing real estate profits, have been a growing source of unrest in China.

The problem stirred an uproar last year as a property boom and resulting rash of mass evictions caused a number of violent clashes, protests and even suicides by stubborn homeowners.

ENRIQUE Iglesias put on an unexpectedly bizarre show at Rod Laver Arena last night.

It started normally - Iglesias busting out a dirty version of Tonight I'm Loving You and Dirty Dancer, despite having a bad hair night and wearing a cap.

But, with an audience comprised mainly of adoring women, he invited three straight men on stage for what became truly surreal entertainment.

They started by telling him he was the most beautiful man alive. Then he asked when they lost their virginity before telling the sell-out crowd about his small penis.

Before long one chap was singing Iglesias' hit, Escape.

"This is why I love Australia," the star said.

Iglesias - who said he was on antibiotics due to a fever that almost saw him cancel the show - even spoke about girlfriend Anna Kournikova. He said they were still together but she'd given him a "leave pass" while he was in Melbourne.

After all the man-love, the show was back on track - hits Bailamos, Not in Love, Hero, Rhythm Divine and Heartbeat, with Melbourne DJ Havana Brown on vocals.

Rapper Pitbull, one of the night's opening acts along with Brown, returned for last year's No.1 I Like It.

Tickets are still available for Iglesias' final Melbourne show at Rod Laver Arena tonight.

Australian citizen murdered in PNG - police

THE body of a man with dual Australian and British citizenship has been found dumped near an oil refinery in Port Moresby.

Police say they are treating the death of John Hulse, 62, as a murder.

Mr Hulse's body was found by security guards near the entrance to the Napa Napa oil refinery in the Papua New Guinean capital on Monday night.

The investigating officer in charge of the investigation, Supt Joseph Tondop, was quoted in local newspapers saying Mr Hulse had been stabbed.

Another policeman, Superintendent Dominic Kakas, said the case was being treated as the wilful murder of an expatriate.

He said Mr Hulse, who lived on a boat moored at Port Moresby's Royal Papua Yacht Club, was declared missing on Sunday.

On Saturday, Mr Hulse received a phone call from a person claiming to have his passport, which he had lost the day before, and told friends he was going to get it.

He went to meet the person alone, and his car was found abandoned about two hours later at nearby Koukou Village.

"He never made it back to his boat where his friends, fearing for his life, reported the matter," Supt Kakas said.

His body was found by the side of the road near the refinery, after villagers from the nearby Roku Village back-burned grass along the road.

Mr Hulse was operations manager for Alliance Group Ltd, a catering company providing food to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant workers.
