FBI helping hunt for woman missing in Nepal

THE FBI says it's helping the US State Department in the investigation of a Colorado woman who disappeared while trekking alone in Nepal.

Denver FBI spokesman Dave Joly said today the agency was also working with Nepalese authorities on the disappearance of 23-year-old Aubrey Sacco of Greeley.

Ms Saccohas notbeen heard from since April 20, when she e-mailed her parents from Nepal. She planned to finish her trip around April 30.

Her father, Paul Sacco, told the Greeley Tribune that FBI agents had made two or three visits to his home.

Paul Sacco went to Nepal in May to look for his daughter.

He said he recovered her laptop computer and journal from a hotel.

Aubrey Sacco graduated from the University of Colorado last year.

Sergio: still battling away but found life tough on Saturday

Sky Bet

Sergio Garcia remains in contention for a first PGA Tour win since 2008 despite enduring a difficult day at the HP Byron Nelson Championship in Texas on Saturday.

The Spaniard - tied for the halfway lead alongside American Ryan Palmer - shot a four-over 74 and failed to make a single birdie during his third round at the TPC Four Seasons Resort.

But with scoring tough on a windy day in Texas, he remains just one shot behind leader Palmer, who also found it tough going during a three-over 73 which left him at five-under.

Garcia and Palmer had started the day three shots clear at eight-under but their struggles saw them come back to the pack.

Arjun Atwal jumped up to tied third-place thanks to a best-of-the-day 67 and the Indian is now just two shots behind along with Japan's Ryuji Imada (70).

It's then a further stroke back to Americans Gary Woodland, Matt Kuchar and Joe Ogilvie at two-under.

Woodland and Kuchar were two of just eight players to break par as the winds and baked greens saw the average score balloon to 73.3 - more than three strokes over par.

Nick Watney suffered a late wobble but is still just four back while Dustin Johnson remains in the hunt after a 69 saw him finish five behind.

Garcia dropped his first shot at the second when missing his par putt from seven feet and a further stroke went at eight.

Bogey

He steadied the ship with seven straight pars but made a bogey six at 16 after missing a short putt and then shoved his tee-shot right at 18 and couldn't save par.

Palmer hit just three of 14 fairways during his 73 but was level par for the day through 13 after a birdie at 10 cancelled out his bogey at the sixth.

But bogeys at 14, 16 and 18 (the closing hole averaged half a stroke over par) meant any hopes of a cushion at the top of the leaderboard were dashed and he'll now take a precarious one-shot lead into the final round.

Garcia's preparations for the Byron Nelson had been hampered by an infected fingernail which caused him to pull out of Open Championship qualifying in Texas earlier this week.

His current world ranking isn't good enough to get him into either next month's US Open at Congressional or The Open at Royal St Georges in July although a win in the Byron Nelson Championship would change all that.

Space's curious case of green crystal rain

Green crystal rain 1

MORE proof that space is amazing, this time from the not-too-distant constellation of Orion, where one star is currently being bombarded with green crystal rain.

The embryonic star is described as "Sun-like" - as in our Sun - and named HOPS-38.

The crystals are a green mineral called olivine and have been spotted raining down from the clouds of gas engulfing HOPS-68 by NASA's Spitzer infrared detectors.

Olivine can be found on Earth, in gemstones and on the green sand beaches of Hawaii. They've also been spotted before by NASA's Stardust and Deep Impact comet-watchers, but this is the first time they've ever been observed falling as "rain".

?You need temperatures as hot as lava to make these crystals,? Tom Megeath of the University of Toledo in Ohio, said.

Prof Megeath is the principal investigator of the research and the second author of a new study appearing in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

?We propose that the crystals were cooked up near the surface of the forming star, then carried up into the surrounding cloud where temperatures are much colder, and ultimately fell down again like glitter.?

Apart from the fact that they're falling on a protostar, the crystals are unusual because they require temperatures around 700C to form, yet are found in the collapsing gas clouds around HOPS-38 where the mercury drops to around -170C.

The Toledo team say that jets of gas blasting away from the star might have lifted crystals into the clouds before raining back down.

If we ever make it to HOPS-38, we might even be able to see them.

?If you could somehow transport yourself inside this protostar?s collapsing gas cloud, it would be very dark,? the study team's lead author Charles Poteet said.

?But the tiny crystals might catch whatever light is present, resulting in a green sparkle against a black, dusty backdrop.?

The scientists detailed their findings in the May 10 issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Man Busted for 'Two and a Half Men' Bomb Threat

A NYC man -- who allegedly takes his sitcoms way too seriously -- was arrested for calling a local television station and threatening to blow it up if it kept airing "Two and a Half Men" re-runs.

The calls -- made to WPIX on May 11 and May 23 --- were traced back to a man named Freddy Caldwell ... according to the NY Post.

According to the paper, Caldwell was charged with falsely reporting an incident and aggravated harassment.

TMZ spoke to a WPIX employee who confirmed the alleged threatening calls were received in their newsroom, but didn't know why the caller was so ticked about 'Men.'

Japan detects high radiation in seabed

Fukushima

JAPAN has revealed radiation up to several hundred times normal levels has been detected on the seabed off the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant.

The science ministry announced highly radioactive materials were detected in a 300km north-south stretch from Kesennuma in Miyagi Prefecture to Choshi in Chiba Prefecture, the Kyodo news agency reports.

The ministry warned that the contamination could affect the safety of seafood, the report said, without giving figures for the radiation levels detected.

The science ministry said it detected iodine and caesium on the seabed at 12 locations 15km to 50km from the coastline between May 9 and 14.

The news followed an announcement by Greenpeace that marine life it had tested in waters more than 20km off the Fukushima nuclear plant showed radiation above legal limits.

The anti-nuclear group, which conducted the coastal and offshore tests this month, criticised Japanese authorities for their ?continued inadequate response to the Fukushima nuclear crisis'' sparked by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

Greenpeace said it detected seaweed radiation levels 50 times higher than official limits, which it charged raised ?serious concerns about continued long-term risks to people and the environment from contaminated seawater''.

It also said that tests, which it said were independently verified by French and Belgian laboratories, showed above-legal levels of radioactive iodine-131 and caesium-137 in several species of fish and shellfish.

In the aftermath of the quake small amounts of radiation from Fukushima spread across Asia, deepening concerns for millions of people in countries which had already imposed bans on Japanese produce from near the nuclear plant.

The governments of China, South Korea, the Philippines and Vietnam reported that radiation had drifted over their territories, although they emphasised the levels were so low that there was no health risk.

Fukushima prefecture has said that no fishing is going on at the moment in its waters.

Officials from Japan's fisheries agency and several prefectures have been checking marine products at different spots, and the government has prohibited fishermen from catching some species found to have elevated radiation levels.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong announced on Friday it had detected a small amount of radioactive iodine-131 in a sample of grey mullet but it was well below government limits.

The Hong Kong government did not say whether the iodine could be traced to the Fukushima plant.

Prince Frederic von Anhalt placed the call on May 17 -- telling the operator, "It's my wife ... her stomach is bleeding. Please send a car right away, shes going to die."

94-year-old Zsa Zsa was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency stomach surgery ... but she slipped into a coma following the operation.
