FBI helping hunt for woman missing in Nepal

THE FBI says it's helping the US State Department in the investigation of a Colorado woman who disappeared while trekking alone in Nepal.

Denver FBI spokesman Dave Joly said today the agency was also working with Nepalese authorities on the disappearance of 23-year-old Aubrey Sacco of Greeley.

Ms Saccohas notbeen heard from since April 20, when she e-mailed her parents from Nepal. She planned to finish her trip around April 30.

Her father, Paul Sacco, told the Greeley Tribune that FBI agents had made two or three visits to his home.

Paul Sacco went to Nepal in May to look for his daughter.

He said he recovered her laptop computer and journal from a hotel.

Aubrey Sacco graduated from the University of Colorado last year.

Allegri eyes new Milan deal

Massimiliano Allegri: Milan's head coach is hopeful of signing a new two-year extension

Sky Bet

Head coach Massimiliano Allegri claims that he will soon sign a contract extension with AC Milan.

The Italian, whose current deal expires next summer, is reportedly set to be offered a new two-year deal that will keep him at the San Siro until June 2014.

And the former Cagliari coach, who guided Milan to their first scudetto since 2004 in his first year in charge last season, expects a deal to be concluded soon.

"(AC Milan vice-president Adriano) Galliani said that I'll stay until 2014 and I explained to both him and (Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi) that my aim is to remain here," Allegri told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"From my part, there is no problem and I never considered the situation to be any different.

"We just have to wait a little bit, talk and lay everything out.

"It's true that you never know what can happen until you sign but I reiterate this is not a problem."

The Rossoneri are currently second in Serie A, just two points behind Juventus, and visit Genoa on Friday night.

Visa bungle brings circus Kardashian unstuck

Kim Kardashian

KIM Kardashian has been placed on an official Australian immigration department watch list after breaching her visa application - three times.

As such a famous face, we can only wonder what Kardashian and her minders were thinking when she pretended to be a tourist on her Australian visit, the Herald Sun reported.

She was here to launch her handbag range and in-store appearances had been widely advertised, and made even more prominent because she had split with husband Kris Humphries.

The launch in Sydney attracted worldwide headlines and coverage - and did not go unnoticed at the Immigration Department.

We're told a subsequent investigation found two earlier visits - in 2007 and last year - were also for business purposes.

The Immigration Department declined to comment on Kardashian directly, but issued a read-between-the-lines statement: "If people are undertaking work in Australia, they need to be on an appropriate visa with work conditions attached to it.

'If people do breach conditions, then the department can counsel them or cancel that person's visa ... and the department may record their breaches and immigration history.

"Their history would be taken into account if they apply for another visa to enter Australia."

  • Study looks at 468 sets of unedited and retouched photos
  • Scientists use computer program to spot augmentations

SCIENTISTS have come up with a way to detect if photographs of celebrities or models have been airbrushed or not.

Now they hope it will be used to provide a universal ?health warning? on magazine images.

Professor of Computer Science Hany Farid and doctoral student Eric Kee, from Dartmouth College in the US, analysed 468 sets of unedited and retouched photographs of models.

They then created a computer program to highlight the differences between a natural and retouched picture, using a mathematical description of augmentations.

Each altered photograph was then judged on a scale of 1 to 5 - with 5 signifying heavy retouching.

Prof Farid and Mr Kee then asked 50 people randomly to compare the photographs against their own ratings and found the scores matched closely.

"Now what we have is a mathematical measure of photo retouching," Prof Farid wrote in study titled: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"We can predict what an average observer would say."

Prof Farid said he undertook the research to provide consumers with more information on Photoshopped images.

?Impossibly thin, tall, and wrinkle- and blemish-free models are routinely splashed onto billboards, advertisements, and magazine covers,? Prof Farid wrote.

They said these highly idealised images have been linked to eating disorders and body image dissatisfaction in men, women, and children.

Prof Farid and Mr Kee said they are seeking a way for advertisers to truthfully and accurately characterise the extent to which an image has been altered, allowing the public to make informed judgments.

They propose a rating system that takes into account common practices such as cropping and colour adjustment while providing assessment of other kinds of modifications.

?Such a rating may provide incentive for publishers and models to reduce some of the more extreme forms of digital retouching that are common today,? they wrote.

Facebook to settle in privacy battle

Facebook Zuckerberg

  • Facebook didn't warn users of privacy change
  • Zuckerberg: a lot of concerns have been addressed
  • But Facebook won't pay to settle case

FACEBOOK is settling with US regulators over charges it deceived consumers with its privacy settings to get people to share more personal information than they originally agreed to.

The Federal Trade Commission had charged that the social network told people they could keep the information they share private, then allowed it to be made public.

The charges go back to at least 2009, when Facebook changed its privacy settings so that information users may have deemed private, such as their list of friends, suddenly became viewable to everyone.

"They didn't warn users that this change was coming, or get their approval in advance," the FTC said.

The FTC said the settlement requires Facebook to get people's approval before changing how it shares their data.

In a blog post, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company has made a "bunch of mistakes". But he adds that this has often overshadowed the good work Facebook has done. He says Facebook has addressed many of the FTC's concerns already.

The settlement is similar to one Google agreed to earlier this year over its Buzz social networking service. Like Google, Facebook has agreed to obtain assessments of its privacy practices by independent, third-party auditors for the next 20 years.

Facebook isn't paying anything to settle the case, though future violations could lead to civil fines.

Zuckerberg said Facebook has created two new executive positions - a chief privacy officer of products and a chief privacy officer of policy as part of its response to the settlement.

Apollo 13 checklist sells at auction

A CHECKLIST used to guide the wounded Apollo 13 spacecraft home after the explosion that led to the famed "Houston, we've had a problem" call has sold at auction in Texas for just under $380,000.

The checklist booklet contains handwritten calculations by Commander James Lovell to determine the spacecraft's angle of descent back to Earth and other notes.

NASA transcripts show how Lovell asked Houston to "check my arithmetic to make sure we got a good course align."

The three-man crew was running out of oxygen, water and heat and only had one chance to make it home safely.

The Apollo 13 Lunar Module Systems Activation Checklist fetched the highest price, at $US388,375 ($378,754), for a piece of Apollo Space Program memorabilia that did not make it to the moon's surface, Heritage Auctions said.

"Without this (booklet) the Apollo 13 crew would not have known their position in space," said Michael Riley, senior historian at the Dallas-based auction house.

"It helped create the greatest successful failure in the history of space exploration."

Apollo 13 was the seventh manned mission in the US space program and was supposed to be the third to land on the moon. But an oxygen tank exploded two days after its April 17, 1970 launch, badly damaging the spacecraft some 200,000 miles from Earth.

The booklet was sold to an anonymous collector who lives on the east coast of the United States.

'Red Shirt' to run for Thai government

A THAI protest leader accused of terrorism was released from prison briefly to apply to run in a by-election seen as a key test of the opposition's prospects of success in nationwide polls.

Kokaew Pikulthong, a senior "Red Shirt" involved in the mass rally in Bangkok that ended last month, will stand against incumbent Panich Vikitsreth of the ruling Democrat Party in the July 25 vote in the capital.

A Thai court last week granted permission for Kokaew, the candidate of the main opposition Puea Thai Party, to be released temporarily from Bangkok Remand Prison to register to challenge Panich, a vice foreign minister.

Mr Kokaew, who has not been convicted of any crimes relating to his role in the two-month-long street protest, was later returned to detention, but is expected to seek permission to be released again to campaign for votes.

The Red Shirts' rally, which at its peak attracted up to about 100,000 people demanding immediate elections, sparked outbreaks of violence that left 90 people dead, mostly civilians, and nearly 1900 injured.

Enraged protesters set fire to dozens of major buildings after the army crushed the demonstration by the mostly poor and working class Reds with an assault on their vast fortified encampment in central Bangkok on May 19.

The Red Shirts were campaigning for elections they hoped would oust the government, which they view as undemocratic because it came to power with the backing of the army after a court ruling threw out the previous administration.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva proposed November polls in a bid to end the crippling protests, but shelved the plan because the Reds -- many of whom seek the return of fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra -- refused to disperse.

Mr Abhisit, whose government was elected by parliamentary vote in 2008 and enjoys support among the Bangkok-based elite, must call nationwide elections by the end of next year at the latest.

Many of the Red Shirt leaders are in jail facing terrorism charges for their roles in the unrest. The government has rejected the opposition's call for a state of emergency to be lifted in the capital for the by-election.
